Contemporary Table Runner

Make a contemporary runner for your table with bold blocks of color. Assembling this quilt is quick and easy with all cut pieces being squares and rectangles. This project is an excerpt from C&T Publishing Cozy Modern Quilts by Kim Schaefer.


Contemporary Table Runner Quilt


Size
Block:10˝ × 10˝
Finished Runner: 16 1/2˝ × 56 1/2˝

Materials

  • 1/3 yard each of 5 different large-scale prints for pieced blocks
  • 1/2 yard coordinating print for pieced blocks and outer border
  • 1/4 yard contrasting print for inner border
  • 2 yards for backing and binding
  • 20˝ × 60˝ batting

Cutting
Cut from the assorted large-scale prints for the pieced blocks:

  • 5 squares 21/2˝ × 21/2˝
  • 5 rectangles 21/2˝ × 61/2˝
  • 5 rectangles 21/2˝ × 101/2˝
  • 5 rectangles 61/2˝ × 101/2˝

Cut from the coordinating print:

  • 5 squares 21/2˝ × 21/2˝ for the pieced blocks
  • 2 strips 21/2˝ × 521/2˝ for the side outer borders
  • 2 strips 21/2˝ × 161/2˝ for the end outer borderss
  • Cut 3 strips 21/2'' x fabric width, piece the strips end to end, and cut the border strips.

Cut from the contrasting print:

  • 2 strips 11/2˝ × 501/2˝ for the side inner borders
  • 2 strips 11/2˝ × 121/2˝ for the end inner borders
  • Cut 3 strips 1 /2'' x fabric width, piece the strips end to end, and cut the border strips.

Piecing

  1. Piece the block as shown. Make 4 blocks.

Putting it all together

Table Runner Center

Arrange and sew together 5 blocks to form the center of the table runner. Press.

Inner Border

  1. Sew the side inner borders to the runner top. Press toward the borders.
  2. Sew the end inner borders to the runner top. Press toward the borders.

Outer Border

  1. Sew the side outer borders to the runner top. Press toward the borders.
  2. Sew the end outer borders to the runner top. Press toward the borders.

Finishing

  1. Layer the table runner top with batting and backing. Baste or pin.
  2. Quilt as desired and bind.
