This basket is just the right size to hold candy or other small party favors. Try this basket in different colors for different seasons or to match the theme of your party. What a wonderful gift for each guest to take home. They will remember your party for years!

Woven Party Basket

Materials:

  • 3/8” flat reed
  • 11/64” flat reed
  • 1/4” flat reed
  • 3/8” flat/oval reed
  • #3 round reed
  • Seagrass

Finished Size: 3 ½” w x 3 ½” l x 5 ½” h—This includes the handle height.

Instructions:

From 3/8” flat reed, cut 9 stakes 13” long and cut 1 stake 30” long.

Lay out 5 of the 13” stakes horizontally. Weave in the 30” stake vertically with an over under weave in the middle of the horizontal stakes. Note: This long stake will become the basket handle. Weave in two 13” stakes on each side of the 30” stake. All weaving is basic over/under. See photo.

Party Basket 2

Twine one row with #3 round reed.

Upset the stakes.

Using basic over/under weaving, weave in the following order:

  • 1st row—3/8” flat reed
  • 2nd row—1/4” flat reed
  • Rows 3-7 – 11/64” flat reed (I used color for this)
  • Rows 8 and 9 – 1/4" flat reed

Cut off your inside stakes and tuck in your outside stakes.  NOTE: Do NOT cut the long 30” stake even if it is on the inside of the basket because this will become your handle.

Bend the ends of the 30” reed over themselves and insert down into the basket on the middle stake on each side.

Place 3/8” flat oval reed around the rim of the basket on the inside and outside, sandwiching a piece of seagrass between the two pieces.

Lash rim in place with 11/64” flat reed.

Add a decorative strip of 11/64” flat dyed reed to the handle. Insert and hide the ends of the dyed reed into the rim.

Enjoy your basket!
