Recycled Can Snowman Ornament

By:

Save recycled materials to create quick and easy homemade Christmas ornaments to hang on your tree. Cover the can in fabric and paint to bring it to life. The more you add your Recycled Can Snowman Ornament from Cyndee Kromminga, the more unique it will look.

Materials:

  • Empty metal can
  • White fabric scraps
  • Scissors
  • Craft glue
  • Blush and a cotton swab
  • Orange dimensional fabric paint
  • Black dimensional fabric paint
  • Christmas fabric scrap
  • Crochet thread
  • Embroidery needle

Instructions:

  1. Rip 1/2-inch-wide strips of white fabric. This is a great way to use up all those little scraps of white fabric left over from previous projects. I wasn't really too choosey about differing shades either, as I thought is gave the snowman a little more one-of-a-kind character.

  2. Apply craft glue around the side edges of a can. You will be able to hold the top and bottom of the can between your fingers as you work.

  3. Place one end of a fabric strip in the glue on the side of the can. Allow the strip to extend over the side to the top. Wrap the strip across the top diameter of the can, over the side and across the bottom diameter. Continue to wrap in the same way, shifting, overlapping and changing directions until the can has been completely covered. Note: When you come to the end of one fabric strip, simple glue the end in place to secure. Apply glue to the end of a new strip and continue to wrap.

  4. Lay the wrapped can on your work surface with one flat side facing up. The entire top surface will be the face of your snowman. Using blush and a cotton swab, center two 1-inch cheeks on the face spaced approximately 1/2 inch apart.

  5. Apply a mini chocolate chip size dot of orange dimensional fabric paint to the center of the snowman's face.

  6. Apply two dots of black dimensional fabric paint above the nose for the eyes, and a line of dots below the nose in the shape of a smile for the mouth. Allow the paint to dry.

  7. Rip a 1-inch-wide by 12-inch-long strip of Christmas fabric. Tie the strip into a bow. Trim the ends. Apply craft glue to the knot on one side of the bow. Position the bow below the mouth. Allow the glue to dry.

  8. Thread an embroidery needle with crochet thread. Stitch through the fabric at the top of the snowman's head on the side of the can. Trim and knot the ends of the thread to create a hanging loop for your ornament.
