Crafty Chalkboard Mugs

Make some fun chalkboard mugs for your mom on Mother's day thanks to Fawnda Norman. You can write her little notes to make her day. This is a great tutorial to follow.

Materials:

  • Mugs (either new or ones you already have!)
  • Painter's tape
  • Sand paper
  • Primer (not pictured)
  • Chalkboard paint (you can get this at most hardware, or craft stores)

Instructions:

  1. Tape off your mug where you want your chalkboard rectangle to be.

  2. Prime you mug in the area you taped off. Let primer dry according to the label.

  3. After the primer is dry, paint on your first layer of chalkboard paint. Let dry according to label.

  4. Paint on your second coat of chalk board paint. Let dry and cure according to the label.

  5. Remove the painter's tape.

  6. Rub some chalk all over the area you painted and wipe off to set the chalkboard paint up. Write whatever you wish on mug.

What about washing?

What a great idea! Definitely going to make some of these. I'm thinking that the sandpaper is to rough up and take the some of the shine off of the cup a little bit on the area you're going to prime so the primer will adhere better. And then lightly sand the primer after it's dried to make sure there are no bumps for your chalkboard area.

Where does the sand paper come in? It is in the supply list, but not in the instructions. Do you sand before you primer or between coats of primer and chalkboard paint?

We need an answer to the sand paper use?

Great craft and I am going to make it. But what is the sand paper for? The instructions call for it but it is not used. Do you sandpaper the area after you tape it and before you prime it?
