It's never too late to start recording your thoughts. Create a Recycled Mixed Media Journal from Heidi Borchers using a wet wipe lid and dive deep into your mind. This journal is both eye-catching and unique, making it a personal space for you to grow and explore your psyche.

Materials:

  • Aleene’s Original Tacky Glue
  • Aleene’s Decoupage (Matte or finish of your choice)
  • Pop-open lid from wet wipes package
  • Wooden journal covers (front journal piece can have frame-like opening) (the covers should be pre-drilled for binding)
  • Spray paint – white (only needed if pop-open lid is not already white)
  • Tissue paper (or old sewing patterns)
  • Optional: Rubber stamp and ink to add additional designs on tissue paper
  • Miscellaneous themed embellishments and ribbons
  • Cording (to bind journal)
  • Beads (to embellish cording)

Instructions:

  1. Remove pop-open lid from wet wipes package. (Some lids you can pull from the packaging and others may need to be cut away from the packaging.)

  2. If needed, spray paint lid on front and back. Let dry completely.

  3. Apply glue to bottom (back) of pop-open lid and press in place over opening on journal cover. Let glue set for at least one hour so that lid does not shift during next step.

  4. Working small sections at a time, brush Decoupage medium onto front cover and onto pop-open lid.

  5. Working small pieces of tissue paper, brush Decoupage medium onto back of tissue. Immediately place onto journal cover, overlapping from cover to edge of pop-up lid. Immediately brush Decoupage medium over tissue paper to secure in place. Continue gluing pieces of tissue until entire journal cover and pop-open lid are covered. To help keep the pop-open lid from sticking while it dries, insert a piece of waxed paper. Repeat to decorate back cover with tissue. Let dry completely.

  6. Glue embellishments in place on front.

  7. Cut and punch paper to fit inside journal.

  8. Thread cording through drilled holes and tie to secure. Add beads to ends of cording.
