Vintage Golf Club Covers

Materials:

  • 1 skein Red Heart® Super Saver® yarn in Real Teal (A)
  • 1 skein Red Heart® Super Saver® yarn in Buff (B)
  • 1 skein Red Heart® Super Saver® yarn in Grey Heather (C)
  • 4mm [US 6] and 5mm [US8] Susan Bates® Double pointed knitting needles
  • Yarn needle
  • Stitch marker

 

Gauge: 16 sts = 4" [10 cm]; 32 rows = 4" [10 cm] in St st with larger needles. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size needles to obtain the gauge.

 

Notes:

Stripe Sequence 1

  • Rounds 1-3:  A
  • Rounds 4-5: B
  • Round 6: C
  • Rounds 7-8: B

Stripe Sequence 2

  • Rounds 1-3: B
  • Round 4-5: C
  • Rounds 6-8: B

 

Instructions:

  1. With smaller needles and using A, cast on 20 sts.  Arrange stitches evenly around three double-pointed needles. Join, taking care not to twist sts. Place marker for beginning of round.
     
  2. Round 1:  [K1, p1]  around until piece measures 5" [12.5 cm] from beginning.
     
  3. Increase Row: *K4, knit front and back of stitch; repeat from * to end of round - 24 sts.
     
  4. Next Row: Change to larger needles and working in St st, work Stripe Sequence 1 3 times.
     
  5. Repeat Rounds 1-3 once AND AT THE SAME TIME, when piece measures 3 ¼" [8.25 cm] from beginning of St st, work decrease rounds as follows:
     
  6. Round 1: *K2, k2tog; repeat from * to end of Round -18 sts.
     
  7. Round 2: Knit.
     
  8. Round 3: *K1, k2tog; repeat from * to end of round -12 sts.
     
  9. Round 4: Knit.
     
  10. Round 5: *K2tog; repeat from * to end of round - 6 sts.
     
  11. Round 6: Knit.

Finishing

  1. Thread tail through remaining 6 stitches and pull to close. Knot to secure. With using A, B, and C make a pompom and attach to top.
     
  2. Weave in ends.

Large Cover (will fit #3 or #5 club)

  1. With smaller needles and using A, cast on 32 sts.  Arrange stitches evenly around three double-pointed needles. Join, taking care not to twist sts. Place marker for beginning of round.
     
  2. Round 1:  [K1, p1] around until piece measures 10" [25 cm] from beginning.
     
  3. Increase Row: *K3, knit front and back; repeat from * to end of round - 40 sts.
     
  4. Next Row: Change to larger needles and work in St st for 1 ½" [3.8 cm]. Work in Stripe Sequence 2 once.  Work color A for 1" [2.54 cm] more then begin decrease rounds as follows:
     
  5. Round 1: *K3, k2tog; repeat from * to end of Round - 32 sts.
     
  6. Round 2: Knit.
     
  7. Round 3: *K2, k2tog; repeat from * to end of round - 24 sts.
     
  8. Round 4: Knit.
     
  9. Round 5: *K1, k2tog; repeat from * to end of round - 16 sts.
     
  10. Round 6: Knit.
     
  11. Round 7: *K2tog; repeat from * to end of round - 8 sts.
     
  12. Round 8: Knit.

Finishing 

  1. Thread tail through remaining 8 stitches and pull to close. Knot to secure. Using A, B, and C make a pompom and attach to top.
     
  2. Weave in ends.
