How to Knit a Sock Monkey

Materials:

  • 1 ball Red Heart® “Heart & Sole™” yarn in Watercolor Stripe (A)
  • 1 ball Red Heart® “Heart & Sole™” yarn in Ivory (B)
  • US 2 [2.75mm] set of double-pointed needles
  • Stitch markers
  • Yarn needle
  • Polyester fiberfill
  • Pompom maker
  • Small amount of black yarn or floss
  • Small amount of black felt
  • Stitch Holder

Gauge: 36 sts = 4”; 48 rows = 4” in Stockinette stitch.

Abbreviations:

  • W&T Bring yarn to front, slip next st, turn, wrap yarn around slip st and slip same st back onto right-hand needle. On next row, work wrapped st by picking up wrap and working together with st on left-hand needle.

Instructions:
16” tall

Legs (Make 2)

  • With A, cast on 6 sts. Divide stitches evenly around double-pointed needles. Join, taking care not to twist sts. Place marker for beginning of round.
     
  • Round 1: K1-f/b in each st around – 12 sts. Ro*und 2: [K1, k1-f/b] around – 18 sts.
     
  • Round 3: [K2, k1-f/b] around – 24.
     
  • Knit every round until piece measures 6½ “ from beginning.
     
  • Bind off 4 sts, leaving remaining 20 sts unworked.
     
  • Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Slip stitches to a stitch holder. Stuff with fiberfill.
     
  • Make second leg to match first. Do not cut yarn.
     
  • To match stripes in Legs, start at same point in color changes of yarn.

Join Legs

  • Sew bind-off sts of both Legs together, using long tail of First Leg.
     
  • Joining Round: Place marker for beginning of round, k20 from Second Leg, k20 from First Leg – 40 sts. Divide sts evenly around needles and join to work in rounds.
     
  • Knit 4 rounds.

Shape Rear
Short Rows

  • Row 1: Knit to 10 sts past beginning marker, W&T.
     
  • Row 2: Purl to 10 sts past marker, W&T.
     
  • Row 3: Knit to 1 st before previously wrapped st, W&T.
     
  • Row 4: Purl to 1 st before previously wrapped st, W&T.
     
  • Repeat Rows 3 and 4 until there are 8 sts between wrapped sts.
     
  • Next Row: Knit to first wrapped st, working in wrap, knit st, W&T.
     
  • Next Row: Purl to first wrapped st, working in wrap, purl st, W&T. Repeat last two rows until all wrapped sts have been worked.
     
  • Working around on all sts, knit for 3½” more.
     
  • Stuff Body, adding filling as Body is worked.
     
  • Next Round: [K2, k2tog] around – 30 sts.
     
  • Next Round: Knit.
     
  • Next Round: [K2, k1-f/b] around – 40 sts.
     
  • Work even for 21/2”.
     
  • Next Round: [Ssk, k3] around – 32 sts.
     
  • Next Round: [Ssk, k2] around – 24 sts.
     
  • Next Round: [Ssk, k1] around - 16.
     
  • Next Round: [Ssk] around – 8 sts.
     
  • Add more filling if necessary.
     
  • Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread tail through remaining sts and pull to close. Knot to secure.

Arms (Make 2)

  • With A, work as for Leg through Round 2.
     
  • Work even on 18 sts until piece measures 6½”.
     
  • Stuff Arm with filling.
     
  • Next Round: [Ssk, k1] around – 12 sts.
     
  • Next Round: [Ssk] around – 6 sts.
     
  • Bind off.
     
  • Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread tail through bind-off sts and pull to close. Knot to secure.

Tail

  • With A, work as for Leg through Round 1.
     
  • Work even on 12 sts for 7”.
     
  • Next Round: [Ssk] around– 6 sts.
     
  • Bind off.
     
  • Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread tail through bind-off sts and pull to close. Knot to secure.

Muzzle

  • With B, cast on 18 sts.
     
  • Row 1: Knit.
     
  • Row 2: Purl.
     
  • Row 3: K15, W&T.
     
  • Row 4: P12, W&T.
     
  • Row 5: K9, W&T.
     
  • Row 6: P6, slip remaining sts to left-hand needle. Drop B and join pink section of A.
     
  • Row 7: With A, knit across all sts, working wraps.
     
  • Row 8: P15, W&T.
     
  • Row 9: K12, W&T.
     
  • Row 10: P9, W&T.
     
  • Row 11: K6, W&T.
     
  • Row 12: P6, work next wrapped st, p2, W&T.
     
  • Row 13: K9, work next wrapped st, k2, W&T.
     
  • Row 14: P12, work next wrapped st, W&T.
     
  • Row 15: K13, work next wrapped st, k1, slip 1. Drop A and continue with B.
     
  • Row 16 (RS): Knit across all sts.
     
  • Rows 17-20: Repeat Rows 8-11.
     
  • Row 21: Knit across, working wraps.
     
  • Row 22: Purl across, working wraps.
     
  • Bind off.

Ears (Make 2)

  • With B, work as for Arms until piece measures 1”.
     
  • Bind off.
     
  • Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Fold Ear in half and use tail to sew closed.

Hat

  • With B, cast on 40 sts. Divide stitches evenly around double-pointed needles. Join, taking care not to twist sts.
     
  • Place marker for beginning of round.
     
  • Work in K2, p2 rib for 1¼”.
     
  • Change to St st and knit for 2” more.
     
  • Next Round: [Ssk, k3] around – 30 sts.
     
  • Next Round: [Ssk, k2] around – 20 sts.
     
  • Next Round: [Ssk, k1] around – 10 sts.
     
  • Next Round: [Ssk] around – 5 sts.
     
  • Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread tail through remaining sts and pull to close. Knot to secure.
     
  • Make a 1½” pompom and attach to top.

Scarf

  • With B, cast on 18 sts. Divide stitches evenly around double-pointed needles. Join, taking care not to twist sts.
     
  • Place marker for beginning of round.
     
  • Work in St St for 12”.
     
  • Bind off.
     
  • Sew ends shut.

Finishing

  • Sew Arms and Tail to Body. Sew Ears and Muzzle to Head.
     
  • Cut two small dots out of felt and attach for eyes.
     
  • Embroider mouth, nose, and eyebrows with black floss.
     
  • Weave in ends.
     
  • Attach hat and scarf.

How can a person get any answers on their questions???? I am stuck on the sock monkey pattern and need help from anyone that knows how to do the W & T plus picking the wraps up and continueing... I been checking back since Sept 4 and still no help.....editors please help.....I would love to make this for my granddaughter..

I think it is adorable but I am stuck on short rows...Anyone please tell me how you wrap yarn around slip st. I am completely lost on the W & T st. Thank you, Marge
