Colorful Stripe Vest

This vest knitting pattern from Patons can be used to make a colorful striped garment for a man or woman. Knit a long or short version based on your tastes.

Instructions:

The instructions are written for smallest size. If changes are necessary for larger sizes the instructions will be written thus ( ).

Note: When working from Chart, carry colors when not in use loosely across WS of work but never over more than 5 sts. When it must pass over more than 5 sts, weave it over and under color in use on next st or at center point of sts it passes over. The colors are never twisted around one another.

LONG VERSION
BACK

**With MC and smaller needles cast on 106 (118-126-134) sts.
1st row: (RS). K2. *P2. K2. Rep from * to end of row.
2nd row: P2. *K2. P2. Rep from * to end of row.
Rep these 2 rows (K2. P2) ribbing for 1½ ins [4 cm] ending on a 2nd row and inc 5 sts evenly across last row. 111 (123-131-139) sts.
Change to larger needles and work Char t in stocking st to end of chart reading knit rows from right to left and pur l rows from left to right.**
Rows 1 to 48 of Chart form pat.
Cont in pat until work from beg measures 16¼ (16¾-17-17) ins [41.5 (42.5-43-43) cm] ending with RS facing for next row.
***Armhole shaping: Keeping cont of pat, cast off 6 (8-9-10) sts beg next 2 rows.
Dec 1 st each end of needle on next and following 6 (8-9-9) alt rows. 85 (89-93-99) sts.
Cont even in pat until armhole measures 9¼ (-10-10½) ins [23.5 (25-25.5-26.5) cm] ending with RS facing for next row.
Shoulder shaping: Cast off 8 (9-9- 10) sts beg next 4 rows, then 9 (8-9-10) sts beg following 2 rows. Leave rem 35 (37-39-39) sts on a st holder.***

LEFT FRONT
With MC and smaller needles cast on 55 (59-63-67) sts.
1st row: (RS). K2. *P2. K2. Rep from * to last st. K1.
2nd row: K1. *P2. K2. Rep from * to last 2 sts. P2.
Rep these 2 rows (K2. P2) ribbing for 1½ ins [4 cm] ending on a 2nd row and inc 0 (2-2-2) sts evenly across last row. 55 (61-65-69) sts.
Change to larger needles and work Chart in stocking st to end of chart reading knit rows from right to left and purl rows from left to right.
Rows 1 to 48 of Chart form pat.
Cont in pat until work from beg measures same length as Back to beg of armhole shaping ending with RS facing for next row.
Armhole shaping: Keeping cont of pat, cast off 6 (8-9-10) sts beg next row.
Work 1 row even in pat.
Dec 1 st at armhole edge on next and following 1 (0-0-1) alt row. 47 (52-55- 57) sts.
Work 1 row even in pat.
Front shaping: Next row: (RS).
Work 2tog. Pat to last 2 sts. Work 2tog (front edge).
Work 1 row even in pat.
Rep last 2 rows 4 (7-8-7) times more. 37 (36-37-41) sts.
Dec 1 st at front edge only on following alt rows until there are 32 (34-34-37) sts, then on every following 4th row until there are 25 (26-27-30) sts.
Cont even in pat until armhole measures same length as Back ending with RS facing for next row.
Shoulder shaping: Cast off 8 (9-9- 10) sts beg next and following alt row.
Work 1 row even. Cast off rem 9 (8-9- 10) sts.

RIGHT FRONT
With MC and smaller needles cast on 55 (59-63-67) sts.
1st row: (RS). K3. *P2. K2. Rep from * to end of row.
2nd row: *P2. K2. Rep from * to last 3 sts. P2. K1.
Rep these 2 rows (K2. P2) ribbing for 1½ ins [4 cm] ending on a 2nd row and inc 0 (2-2-2) sts evenly across last row. 55 (61-65-69) sts.
Change to larger needles and work Chart in stocking st to end of chart reading knit rows from right to left and purl rows from left to right.

Pin garment pieces to measurements and using a steam iron, press lightly with a damp cloth leaving to dry on garment pieces.
Button and Buttonhole Band: Sew shoulder seams. With RS of work facing, MC and circular needle pick up and knit 113 (119-125-125) sts up right front edge to first front dec and 51 (56-58-61) sts up right front neck edge. Knit across 35 (37-37-39) sts from back st holder dec 1 st at center.
Pick up and knit 51 (56-58-61) sts down left front neck edge to first front dec and 113 (119-125-125) sts down left front edge. 362 (386-402-410) sts.
Do not join. Working back and forth across needle, proceed as follows:
Beg on a 2nd row, work 3 rows in (K2. P2) ribbing as given for Back.
Her Version: 4th row: Rib across 3 sts. *Cast off 2 sts. Rib across 16 (17- 18-18) sts (including st on needle after cast off ). Rep from * 5 times more. Cast off 2 sts. Rib to end of row.
His Version: 4th row: Rib to last 113 (119-125-125) sts. *Cast off 2 sts. Rib across 16 (17-18-18) sts (including st on needle after cast off ).
Rep from * 5 times more. Cast off 2 sts. Rib to end of row.
Both Versions: 5th row: Rib, casting on 2 sts over cast off sts.
Work a further 2 rows ribbing. Cast off in ribbing.
Armbands: With RS of work facing, MC and smaller needles pick up and knit 102 (106-114-118) sts evenly along armhole edge.
Beg on a 2nd row, work 7 rows in (K2. P2) ribbing as given for Back. Cast off in ribbing.
Sew side and armband seams. Sew buttons to correspond to buttonholes.
Press seams.

SHORT VERSION
BACK

Work from ** to ** as given for Back of Long Version.
Cont in pat until work from beg measures 14¾ (14¾-15-15) ins [37.5 (37.5-38-38) cm] ending with RS facing for next row.
Work from *** to *** as given for Back of Long Version.

LEFT FRONT and RIGHT FRONT
Work as given for Long Version.

FINISHING
Pin garment pieces to measurements and press lightly with a damp cloth leaving to dry on garment pieces.
Button and Buttonhole Band: Sew shoulder seams. With RS of work facing, MC and circular needle pick up and knit 101 (101-105-105) sts up right front edge to first front dec and 51 (56-58-61) sts up right front neck edge. Knit across 35 (37-37-39) sts from back st holder dec 1 st at center.
Pick up and knit 51 (56-58-61) sts down left front neck edge to first front dec and 101 (101-105-105) sts down left front edge. 338 (350-362-370) sts. Do not join. Working back and forth across needle, proceed as follows: Beg on a 2nd row, work 3 rows in (K2. P2) ribbing as given for Back.
Her Version: 4th row: Rib across 3 sts. *Cast off 2 sts. Rib across 22 (22-23-23) sts (including st on needle after cast off ). Rep from * 3 times more. Cast off 2 sts. Rib to end of row.
His Version: 4th row: Rib to last
101 (101-105-105) sts. *Cast off 2 sts.
Rib across 22 (22-23-23) sts (including st on needle after cast off ).

Both Versions: 5th row: Rib, casting on 2 sts over cast off sts.
