MATERIALS

  • Patons Astra (50 g/1.75 oz)
    • 4 5 6 balls
  • Knitting Needles: Sizes 3.75 (U.S. 5) and 4 mm (U.S. 6) or size needed to obtain tension. 6 buttons.

SIZES - 4 6 8

Chest measurement

  • 4 24 ins [61 cm]
  • 6 26 ins [66 cm]
  • 8 28 ins [71 cm]

Finished chest

  • 4 30 ins [76 cm]
  • 6 33 ins [84 cm]
  • 8 35 ins [89 cm]

TENSION
22 sts and 29 rows = 4 ins [10 cm] with larger needles in pat.

ABBREVIATIONS
KB1 = knit into back of next st.

INSTRUCTIONS
The instructions are written for smallest size. If changes are necessary for larger sizes the instructions will be written thus ( ).

BACK
With smaller needles, cast on 85 (91-97) sts.
1st row: (RS). K1. *P1. K1. Rep from * to end of row.
This row forms seed st pat.
Work in seed st for 1 inch [2.5 cm] ending with RS facing for next row, and inc 1 st at center of last row. 86 (92-98) sts.
Change to larger needles and proceed as follows:
1st row: Purl.
2nd row: Knit.
3rd row: P2. *KB1. P2. Rep from * to end of row.
Last 2 rows form pat.
Cont in pat until work from beg measures 15 (16½-18) ins [38 (42-45.5) cm] ending with RS facing for next row.
Shoulder shaping: Cast off 9 (10-11) sts beg next 6 rows.
Cast off rem 32 sts.
Pocket Lining (Make 1).
With smaller needles, cast on 18 sts. Work 3½ ins [9 cm] in stocking st, ending with RS facing for next row and dec 1 st at center of last row. Leave these 17 sts on a st holder.

Change to larger needles and proceed as follows:
1st row: (RS). Purl.
2nd row: Knit.
3rd row: P2. *KB1. P2. Rep from * to end of row.
Last 2 rows form pat.**
Cont in pat until work from beg measures 3¾ ins [9.5 cm] ending with RS facing for next row.
Pocket placement: Next row: Pat 11 (11-14) sts across. Slip next 17 sts onto a st holder. Pat across 17 sts from pocket lining. Pat to end of row.
Cont in pat until work from beg measures 12¾ (14¼-15¼) ins [32.5 (36-38.5) cm] ending with WS facing for next row.

Dec 1 st at neck edge every row 6 times then every alt row until there are 27 (30-33) sts.

SLEEVES
With smaller needles, cast on 41 sts.

Change to larger needles and cont in pat, inc 1 st each end of needle on 3rd and following 4th row to 63 (63-73) sts, then every following 6th row to 73 (77-83) sts taking inc sts into pat.
Cont in pat until work from beg measures 11 (13- 14) ins [28 (33-35.5) cm] ending with RS facing for next row. Cast off.

FINISHING
Pin garment pieces to measurements. Cover with a damp cloth leaving to dry.
Buttonhole Band: With RS of work facing and smaller needles, pick up and knit 57 (63-69) sts up along right front edge between cast on and neck edges.
Work 3 rows in seed st as given for Back, ending with RS facing for next row.
Next row: Pat 3 (4-4) sts. *yfwd. K2tog. Pat 6 (7- 8) sts. Rep from * 5 times more. yfwd. K2tog. Pat to end of row.
Work 3 rows in seed st. Cast off in pat (RS).
Button Band:Work to correspond to buttonhole band omitting all reference to buttonholes.
Collar: Sew shoulder seams. With smaller needles, cast on 15 sts.

These 18 rows form lace pat.
Cont in pat until Collar, when slightly stretched, fits neck edge and ending with 18th row. Cast off.
Pocket Border: With RS of work facing and smaller needles, knit across 17 sts from pocket st holder.
Work ¾ inch [2 cm] in seed st as given for Back.
Cast off in pat.
Sew pocket edging in position on RS and pocket lining in position on WS. Place markers on Fronts and Back side edges 6½ (7-7½) ins [16.5 (18-19) cm] down from shoulder seams. Sew in sleeves placing rows above markers along cast off sts at armholes to form square armholes.
Sew side and sleeve seams. Sew collar in position as illustrated. Sew buttons to correspond to buttonholes.
