This knit kid's cardigan hoodie from Patons looks great in soft stripes and matching roses. A nice light jacket in the cooler seasons, for the intermediate knitter.

MATERIALS

  • Patons® Astra (50 g/1.75 oz)
  • Sizes: 2 (4-6)
  • Main Color (MC) (Aran) 4 (5-6) balls
  • Contrast A (Pink) 1 (1-1) ball
  • Contrast B (Lilac) 1 (1-1) ball
  • Contrast C (Aqua) 1 (1-1) ball
  • Small amounts of Contrast D (Green)& Contrast E (Dk Pink) for embroidery.
  • Knitting Needles: sizes 3¼ mm (U.S. 3) and 4 mm (U.S. 6).
  • Double pointed needles: Pair of 3¼ mm (U.S. 3), or size needed to obtain tension.
  • 5 buttons.

SIZES
Chest measurement
2: 21 ins [53.5 cm]
4: 23 ins [58.5 cm]
6: 25½ ins [65 cm]
Finished chest
2: 26 ins [66 cm]
4: 28 ins [71 cm]
6: 31½ ins [80 cm]

TENSION
22 sts and 30 rows = 4 ins [10 cm] with larger needles in stocking st.

ABBREVIATIONS
M1 = Make one st by picking up horizontal loop lying before next st and knitting into back of loop.

INSTRUCTIONS
The instructions are written for smallest size. If changes are necessary for larger sizes, the instructions will be written thus ( ).

Stripe Pat
With A, work 4 rows in stocking st.
With MC, work 4 rows in stocking st.
With B, work 4 rows in stocking st.
With MC, work 4 rows in stocking st.
With C, work 4 rows in stocking st.
With MC, work 4 rows in stocking st.
Rep last 24 rows once more.
These 48 rows form Stripe Pat.

BACK
With MC and smaller needles, cast on 67 (73-83) sts.
1st row: (RS). K1. *P1. K1. Rep from * to end of row.
This row forms seed st.
Cont in seed st until work from beg measures 1 (1-1½) ins [2.5 (2.5-4) cm], inc 4 sts evenly across last row and ending with RS facing for next row. 71 (77-87) sts.
Change to larger needles and work 2 rows in stocking st.
Work 48 rows in Stripe Pat.
With MC, cont in stocking st until work from beg measures 7½ (8½-9) ins [19 (21.5-23) cm], ending with RS facing for next row.
Shape armholes: Cast off 5 (5-6) sts beg next 2 rows. 61 (67-75) sts.
With MC, cont even until armhole measures 6 (6½-7) ins [15 (16.5-18) cm], ending with RS facing for next row.
Shape shoulders: Cast off 9 (11-12) sts beg next 2 rows, then cast off 10 (11- 13) sts beg following next 2 rows. Leave rem 23 (23-25) sts on a st holder.

LEFT FRONT
**With MC and smaller needles, cast on 37 (39-41) sts.
Proceed in seed st, as given for Back, until work from beg measures 1 (1-1½) ins [2.5 (2.5-4) cm], inc 1 (2-2) st(s) evenly across last row and ending with RS facing for next row. 38 (41-43) sts.
Change to larger needles and work 2 rows in stocking st.
Work 48 rows in Stripe Pat.**
With MC, cont in stocking st until work from beg measures 7½ (8½-9) ins [19 (21.5-23) cm], ending with RS facing for next row.
Shape armhole: Cast off 5 (5-6) sts beg next row. 33 (36-37) sts.
Cont even until armhole measures 3½ (4-4½) ins [9 (10-11.5) cm], ending with RS facing for next row.
Shape neck: Next row: (RS). Knit to last 8 sts. K2tog. K1. Turn. Leave rem 5 sts on a safety pin.

With MC, cont in stocking st until work from beg measures 7½ (8½-9) ins [19 (21.5-23) cm], ending with WS facing for next row.
Shape armhole: Cast off 5 (5-6) sts beg next row. 33 (36-37) sts.
Cont even until armhole measures 3½ (4-4½) ins [9 (10-11.5) cm], ending with WS facing for next row.
Shape front: Next row: Purl to last 8 sts. P2togtbl. P1. Turn. Leave rem 5 sts on a safety pin.
Next row: K1. Sl1. K1. psso. Knit to end of row.
Next row: Purl to last 3 sts. P2togtbl. P1.
Next row: K1. Sl1. K1. psso. Knit to end of row.
Next row: Purl.
Rep last 2 rows 5 (5-3) times more. 19 (22-25) sts.
Cont even until armhole measures 6 (6½-7) ins [15 (16.5-18) cm], ending with WS facing for next row.
Shape shoulder: Cast off 9 (11-12) sts beg next row. Knit 1 row. Cast off rem 10 (11-13) sts.

SLEEVES
With MC and smaller needles, cast on 39 (41-43) sts.
Proceed in seed st, as given for Back, until work from beg measures 1 (1-1½) in(s) [2.5 (2.5-4) cm], inc 4 sts evenly across last row and ending with RS facing for next row. 43 (45-47) sts.
Change to larger needles and work 2 rows in stocking st.
Work 48 rows of Stripe Pat, inc 1 st each end of needle on 5th and every following 4th row. 65 (67-69) sts.
With MC, cont in stocking st, inc 1 st each end of needle on every following 4th row from previous inc to 67 (71- 77) sts.
Cont even until work from beg measures 10 (11-12½) ins [25.5 (28-32) cm], ending with RS facing for next row. Cast off.
Place markers on side edges of Sleeves ¾(¾-1) inch [2 (2-2.5) cm] down from cast off edge.
Buttonhole Band: With RS of work facing, MC and smaller needles, pick up and knit 61 (67-73) sts.
1st row: (RS). K1. *P1. K1. Rep from * to end of row.
Rep last row twice more.
Next row: (RS). (Buttonhole row). Pat 3 (2-3) sts. [Cast off 2 sts. K11 (13-14) (including st on needle after cast off )] 4 times. Cast off 2 sts. Pat 4 (3-4) sts.
Next row: Work in seed st, casting on 2 sts over cast off sts.
Work 2 rows even in seed st. Cast off in pat.
Button Band: Work as given for Buttonhole Band, omitting all references to buttonholes.

HOOD
Sew shoulder seams. With RS of work facing, MC and larger needles, cast on 4 sts. Knit these 4 sts. Pick up and knit 5 sts across Buttonhole Band. K5 from Right Front safety pin. Pick up and knit 12 (13-14) sts up Right Front neck edge. K23 (23-25) from Back st holder.
Pick up and knit 12 (13-14) sts down Left Front neck edge. K5 from Left Front safety pin. Pick up and knit 5 sts across Button Band. Turn. Cast on 4 sts. 75 (77-81) sts.
Left Side Hood shaping: 1st row: (WS). P14. Turn. Leave rem sts unworked.
2nd and alt rows: Sl1. Knit to end of row.
3rd row: P16. Turn.
4th row: With A, Sl1. Knit to end of row.
5th row: P18. Turn.
7th row: P20. Turn.
8th row: With MC, Sl1. Knit to end of row.
9th row: P22. Turn.
11th row: P24. Turn.
12th row: With B, Sl1. Knit to end of row.
13th row: P26. Break B.
Right Side Hood shaping: With RS of work facing, join MC to beg of hood. K14. Turn. Leave rem sts unworked.
2nd and alt rows: Sl1. Purl to end of row.
3rd row: With A, K16. Turn.
5th row: K18. Turn.
7th row: With MC, K20. Turn.
9th row: K22. Turn.
11th row: With B, K24. Turn.
13th row: Knit across all sts.
14th row: Purl.
Cont working in Stripe Pat, proceed as follows:
Next row: (RS). K37 (38-40). M1. K1. M1. K37 (38-40). 77 (79-83) sts.
Work even in Stripe Pat for 7 rows.
Cont in Stripe Pat, inc 2 sts at center, as before, on next and every following 8th row to 87 (89-95) sts.
Cont even in Stripe Pat, until Hood from pick up row measures 7½ (8-8½) ins [19 (20.5-21.5) cm] ending with RS facing for next row. Cast off.
Fold Hood in half and sew top seam.
Fold 4 cast on sts to WS and sew in position for cord casing, leaving openings for cord at cast on edges.
Cord: With MC and 2 double pointed needles, cast on 3 sts. K3. *Slide sts to other end of needle without turning work. K3. Rep from * until first cord measures 34 ins [86.5 cm]. Cast off.
Thread cord through hood casing opening. Tie a knot at each end of cord.

FINISHING: Pin garment pieces to measurements and cover with a damp cloth, allowing cloth to dry.
Using duplicate st, embroider Chart on Left Front having first st of Chart on 7th row above armhole shaping, and on 6th (9th-10th) st in from side seam.
Using duplicate st, embroider Chart on Right Front having first st of Chart on 6th row above armhole shaping, and on 8th st in from center front.
Using duplicate st, embroider Chart on Back having first st of Chart on 7th row above armhole shaping, and on 6th (9th-10th) st in from side seam for first Motif. Embroider a second Motif to correspond.
Sew in sleeves placing rows above markers along cast off sts of front and back to form square armholes. Sew side and sleeve seams. Sew buttons to correspond to buttonholes.
