Adorable Knit Puppy

Looking for a cute four legged friend but don't feel like cleaning up after it? This free knitting pattern from Bernat Yarns is the perfect solution. Knit yourself a cute little puppy. Bernat boa makes him such a soft friend.

MEASUREMENT
Approx 12 ins [30.5 cm] tall.

GAUGE
15 sts and 28 rows = 4 ins [10 cm] in stocking st.

MATERIALS

  • Bernat® Boa (50 g/1.75 oz)
  • Main Color (MC)
  • Contrast A (White) 2 balls
  • (Brown) 3 balls

Size 5.5 mm (U.S. 9) knitting needles or size needed to obtain gauge. 2 yds [1.80 m] smooth black yarn for nose. Pair of brown Animal Eyes 15 mm diameter. Stuffing. Dog collar 12 ins [30.5 cm] long.

ABBREVIATIONS
Alt = Alternate.
Approx = Approximately.
Beg = Beginning.
Cont = Continue.
Dec = Decrease.
Inc = Increase 1 stitch by knitting into front and back of next stitch.
K = Knit.
K2tog = Knit next 2 stitches together.
P = Purl.
Psso = Pass slipped stitch over next stitch.
Rem = Remaining.
Rep = Repeat.
RS = Right side.
St(s) = Stitch(es).
Sl1 = Slip next stitch knitwise.
Tog = Together.
WS = Wrong side.

Steps:
Note: When working in Color Block technique, wind small balls of the colors to be used, one for each separate area of color in the design. Start new colors at appropriate points. To change colors, twist the two colors around each other where they meet on WS to avoid a hole.

BODY
With MC, cast on 8 sts.
Work 2 rows in stocking st.
1st row: (RS). Inc 1 st in each st to end of row. 16 sts.
2nd and alt rows: Purl.
3rd row: Inc 1 st in first st. K1. *Inc 1 st in next st. K1. Rep from * to end of row. 24 sts.
5th row: K1. Inc 1 st in next st. *K2. Inc 1 st in next st. Rep from * to last st. K1. 32 sts.
7th row: K1. Inc 1 st in next st. *K3. Inc 1 st in next st. Rep from * to last 2 sts. K2. 40 sts.
Work 3 rows even.
11th row: K2. Inc 1 st in next st. *K4. Inc 1 st in next st. Rep from * to last 2 sts. K2. 48 sts.
Work 3 rows even.
15th row: K2. Inc 1 st in next st. *K5.
Inc 1 st in next st. Rep from * to last 3 sts. K3. 56 sts.
Work 3 rows even.
19th row: K3. Inc 1 st in next st. *K6.

33rd row: With A, K4. K2tog. K2.
K2tog. With MC, K20. With A, K2tog. K2. K2tog. K4. 36 sts.
Work 3 rows even, having first and last 8 sts in A.
37th row:With A, K4. (K2tog) twice.
With MC, K20. With A, (K2tog) twice. K4. 32 sts.
Purl 1 row, having first and last 6 sts in A. Break MC.

Shape right side of neck: Next row: (RS). With A, K12. Turn. Leave rem sts on a spare needle.
Cast off 2 sts beg of next and following alt rows 3 times more. 4 sts.
Knit 1 row. Cast off purlwise (WS).
Work RS of work facing, rejoin MC to rem sts and cast off next 8 sts. Break MC. With A, knit to end of row. 12 sts.
Work 1 row even.
Cast off 2 sts beg of next and following alt rows 3 times more. 4 sts.
Purl 1 row. Cast off knitwise (RS).
Beg at neck edge, sew center front seam of Body, using flat seam. Weave yarn through cast on sts and draw up tightly. Fasten securely. Stuff Body through neck opening.

HEAD
With A, cast on 12 sts. With MC, cast on 8 sts. With A, cast on 12 sts. 32 sts.
1st row: (RS). With A, K12. With MC, K8. With A, K12.
2nd row:With A, P12. With MC, P8. With A, P12.
3rd row: With A, inc 1 st in first st. K11. With MC, K8. With A, K10. Inc 1 st in next st. K1. 34 sts.
4th row: With A, inc 1 st in first st. P12. With MC, P8. With A, P11. Inc 1 st in next st. P1. 36 sts.
Keeping center 8 sts in MC, cast on 1 st each end of needle on next 4 rows. 44 sts.
Keeping center 8 sts in MC, proceed as follows:
Work 2 rows even.
Next row: (RS). K2. Inc 1 st in each of next 3 sts. Knit to last 5 sts. Inc 1 st in each of next 3 sts. K2. 50 sts.
Work 5 rows even.

Shape muzzle: Cast off 7 sts beg next 2 rows. 36 sts.

Shape right side of face: Next row: (RS). With A, K12. Inc 1 st in next st. Turn. Leave rem sts on a spare needle.
Work 1 row even.
Dec 1 st each end of needle on next and following alt rows 4 times more. 4 sts.
Purl 1 row. Cast off (RS).
With MC, work on next 10 sts from spare needle for Head gusset, as follows:
Next row: (RS). K1. Inc 1 st in next st. K6. Inc 1 st in next st. K1. 12 sts.
Work 17 rows even.
Dec 1 st at each end of next and following alt rows 3 times more. 4 sts.
Work 9 rows even.
Next row: K2tog. Sl1. K1. psso. 2 sts.
Cast off (WS).
With A, work on rem 13 sts from spare needle for Left side of face:
Next row: (RS). Inc 1 st in first st. K12. 14 sts.
Purl 1 row.
Dec 1 st each end of needle on next and following alt rows 4 times more. 4 sts.
Purl 1 row. Cast off (RS).
Beg at neck edge and using flat seam, sew center front Seam of Head to muzzle shaping.
Sew side edges of gusset to sides of Head, having center front seam of muzzle at center of cast off sts of gusset.
Following manufacturer’s instructions, attach eyes as shown in picture. Using smooth black yarn, satin stitch nose across seam where Head gusset meets muzzle. Stuff head.
Sew Head to Body aligning center front seams.

TAIL
With MC, cast on 13 sts.
Proceed in stocking st until work from beg measures 5 ins [12.5 cm], ending with RS facing for next row. Break MC, leaving a long end.
With A, cont in stocking st until work from beg measures 6 ins [15 cm], ending with RS facing for next row.

Shape tip: Next row: *K2. K2tog. Rep from * to last st. K1. 10 sts.
Work 3 rows even.
Next row: *K1. K2tog. Rep from * to last st. K1. 7 sts.
Work 3 rows even.
Break A, leaving a long end. Thread end through rem sts and draw up tightly. Fasten securely. Sew side edges tog using flat seam .
Stuff Tail lightly.

FRONT LEGS
Left Leg: With A, cast on 13 sts.
**Proceed in stocking st for 2 rows.

Shape paw: Next row: (RS). K3. Inc 1 st in each of next 7 sts. K3. 20 sts.
Work 5 rows even.
Next row: K3. (K2tog) 7 times. K3. 13 sts. Place marker at end of row.**
Beg with a purl row, cont even until work from marked row measures 4 ins [10 cm], ending with RS facing for next row.
Cast off 2 sts beg next 4 rows. Cast off rem 5 sts.

Right Leg: With MC, cast on 13 sts.
Work from ** to ** as given for Left Leg. Break MC.
Beg with a purl row, with A, cont even until work from marked row measures 4 ins [10 cm], ending with RS facing for next row.
Cast off 2 sts beg next 4 rows. Cast off rem 5 sts.
Fold Front Legs in half lengthwise. Sew center back seam and cast on edge using flat seam. Stuff Front Legs.

BACK LEGS (make 2)
With A, cast on 7 sts.
1st row: (RS). Inc 1 st in each st to end of row. 14 sts.
Beg with a purl row, proceed in stocking st until work from beg measures 4 ins [10 cm], ending with RS facing for next row.
Next row: *K2tog. Rep from * to end of row. 7 sts.
Next row: Purl.
Break yarn, leaving a long end. Thread end through rem sts and draw up tightly. Fasten securely. Sew side edges tog using flat seam. Stuff Legs. Weave yarn through sts of cast on row and draw up tightly. Fasten securely.
Sew Back Legs to base of Body, making sure Puppy sits properly. Position top of Front Legs against Puppy’s chest so that paws face forward and Puppy sits up as shown in picture. Sew Front Legs to chest.
Sew Tail in position.

EARS
Outer Ear (make 2)
With MC, cast on 12 sts.
Proceed in stocking st until work from beg measures 2 ins [5 cm], ending with RS facing for next row.
Dec 1 st each end of needle on next and every following 4th row to 4 sts.
Work 1 row even. Cast off.

Ear Lining (make 2)
With A, cast on 9 sts.
Proceed in stocking st until work from beg measures 1¾ ins [4.5 cm], ending with RS facing for next row.
Dec 1 st each end of needle on next and every following 4th row to 3 sts.
Work 1 row even. Cast off.
With WS tog, sew Ear Lining to Outer Ear, stretching lining slightly to fit (finished Ear will curl over). Position Ears on Head as shown in picture and sew in position.
Buckle Dog Collar around neck.
