Traditional Holiday Stocking with Tiny Mitten Pocket

This Traditional Holiday Stocking with Tiny Mitten Pocket from Red Heart Yarn is modern and old fashioned.  Knit Christmas stockings make great gifts when stuffed with goodies...and don't forget to fill the little pocket with something extra special!  This is a great project for knitters who are looking for a bit of a challenge with their next project...and once you get the ball rolling, this stocking is really fun and easy to make.  Personalize this knit Christmas pattern with a name or initials on the little mitten so everyone knows whose stocking is whose!

Traditional Holiday Stocking with Tiny Mitten Pocket

Materials:

  • 1 skein Red Heart® Super Saver® Yarn in Cherry Red (A)
  • 1 skein Red Heart® Super Saver® Yarn in Soft White (B)
  • 1 skein Red Heart® Super Saver® Yarn in Paddy Green (C)
  • 1 skein Red Heart® Super Saver® Yarn in Gold (D)
  • Set of 4 5mm [US 8] double point knitting needles
  • Stitch holder
  • Yarn needle

Gauge:

  • 17 sts = 4”; 24 rows = 4” in St st. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size needles to obtain the gauge.

Special Abbreviations:

  • Wrap = slip next st purlwise to right needle, bring yarn between the needles, slip st back to left needle unworked.
  • M1 (make one stitch) = Lift running thread before next stitch onto left needle and knit into the back loop.

Instructions:

Leg

  1. With A, cast on 56 sts. Join in the round being careful the cast on is not twisted.
     
  2. Rounds 1-5: * K2, P2; repeat from * around. Cut A. With B, knit 4 rounds. With C, knit 4 rounds. With B, knit 20 rounds. With C, knit 4 rounds. With B, knit 2 rounds.

 

Heel

  1. ** Row 1: With A, K28 sts; TURN. Leave remaining 28 sts on a holder.
     
  2. Row 2: P27, wrap, turn.
     
  3. Row 3: K26, wrap, turn.
     
  4. Row 4: P25, wrap, turn.
     
  5. Row 5: K24, wrap, turn.
     
  6. Continue to work each row 1 st shorter until 10 sts remain.
     
  7. Next Row: K11, knitting wrap with last st, turn.
     
  8. Next Row: P12, purling wrap with last st, turn.
     
  9. Next Row: K13, knitting wrap with last st, turn.
     
  10. Continue to work each row 1 st longer until all 28 sts have been worked. Cut A. **

 

Foot

  1. Resume working in the round
     
  2. With B, knit 2 rounds.
     
  3. With C, knit 4 rounds.
     
  4. With B, knit 12 rounds.
     
  5. With C, knit 4 rounds.
     
  6. With B, knit 4 rounds.

 

Toe

  1. With A work same as heel from ** to ** on first 28 sts. Cut yarn. Graft or sew last row of toe to last round of B worked on foot.

 

Mitten

  1. With D, cast on 16 sts. Join in the round being careful the cast on is not twisted.
     
  2. Rounds 1 and 2: * K1, P1; repeat from * around.
     
  3. Knit 2 rounds.

 

Thumb Gusset

  1. Round 1: K7, M1, K2, M1, K7 – 18 sts.
     
  2. Round 2: Knit.
     
  3. Round 3: K7, M1, K4, M1, K7 – 20 sts.
     
  4. Round 4: Knit.
     
  5. Round 5: K7, M1, K6, M1, K7 – 22 sts.
     
  6. Round 6: Knit.

 

Divide for Hand

  1. K7, slip next 8 sts onto holder for thumb, K7. Knit 6 rounds even on these 14 sts.
     
  2. Next Round: [K2tog] 7 times. Cut yarn. Thread through all sts and fasten off.

 

Thumb

  1. Place 6 sts back on needles. Knit 4 rounds.
     
  2. Next Round: [K2tog] 3 times. Cut yarn. Thread through all sts and fasten off.
     
  3. Sew mitten to front of stocking.
