Knit Snowman Family

You can create an adorable snowman family without having to step one foot outside.  This sweet Knit Snowman Family makes a great winter decoration for your home and creating these cool knitting patterns is a great way to spend a snowy afternoon indoors.  Create this cute ensemble as a stocking stuffer or use them to decorate your mantel for the winter.  This easy knitting pattern is simple enough for any knit wit to master...and you'll love making a whole snowman family to show off and display!

Knit Snowman Family

Materials:

  • 6 Styrofoam balls: 3 and 4 inches for large snowman, 2-1/2 and 3 inches for medium, 2 and 2-1/2 inches for small
  • 4 ounces white yarn for bodies
  • 4 ounces blue or whatever color you choose for hats and scarves
  • Small amount of black and red felt for eyes and mouth
  • #5 standard knitting needles
  • Large eye sewing needle for yarn to sew up edges of snowman body and hat
  • Hot glue or craft glue of your choice
  • 2-inch piece of cardboard

 

Instructions:
Take top and bottom styrofoam balls and press firmly together to flatten, pull apart and glue in place to make snowman body form for all three.

Mr. Snowman

  1. With white yarn cast on 30 stitches for body.
     
  2. Work pattern as follows: Row 1: Knit
     
  3. Row 2: Purl
     
  4. Row 3: Purl to last 3 stitches, turn and knit back and count as Row 4. This makes a decrease row.
     
  5. Row 5: Knit
     
  6. Rows 6-7-8 Purl
     
  7. Repeat this pattern until there are 9 decrease sections that fit over the  large snowman body form.
     
  8. Bind off , sew edges together and pull over large snowman form.

Hat

  1. With blue yarn cast on 44 stitches.
     
  2. Work 5 rows ribbing; knit 1 stitch, purl 1 stitch.
     
  3. Then stockinette stitch; knit 1 row, purl 1 row until piece measures 2-1/2 inches.
     
  4. Across next row knit 2 together, work 3 rows stockinette and 1 row knit 2 together.
  5. Draw up stitches.
     
  6. Sew seam and add pom-pom.

Pom Pom

  1. Wind 20 strands of yarn over 2-inch piece of cardboard.
     
  2. Cut a piece of yarn and tie around center.
     
  3. Cut ends and trim into ball.

Scarf

  1. With blue yarn cast on 50 stitches, work 4 rows of seed stitch(knit the purl, purl the knit), bind off. Add tassels.
     
  2. For tassels, cut four 4-inch lengths of blue yarn, pull ends through halfway end of scarf and tie. Repeat for other end of scarf.

 

Mrs. Snowman

  1. With white yarn cast on 22 stitches for body.
     
  2. Work pattern 8 times as for Mr. Snowman except there is 8 decrease sections.
     
  3. On decrease row, knit to last 2 stitches and turn.
     
  4. Finish just like Mr. Snowman.

Hat

  1. With blue yarn cast on 34 stitches.
     
  2. Work 4 rows of ribbing, then stockinette for 2 inches.
     
  3. Finish decrease and hat as for Mr. Snowman's hat.

Scarf

  1. With Blue yarn cast on 40 stitches.
     
  2. Work 2 rows of seed stitch.
     
  3. Bind off. Add tassels half the size of Mr. Snowman's.

 

Baby Snowman

  1. With white yarn cast on 16 stitches for body.
     
  2. Work pattern 6 times until there are 6 decrease sections.
     
  3. On turn row (row 3) work to last 2 stitches, then turn.
     
  4. Finish just like Mr. and Mrs. Snowman.

Hat

  1. With blue yarn cast on 27 stitches.
     
  2. Work 3 rows of ribbing, then stockinette stitch to 1-3/4 inches.
     
  3. Finish decrease and hat as for Mr. and Mrs. Snowman's hat.

Scarf

  1. With blue cast on 35 stitches.
     
  2. Work 2 rows of seed stitch.
     
  3. Bind off.
     
  4. Add tassels same as for Mr. and Mrs. Snowman.

 

For All

  1. Add faces cutting eyes nose and mouth from felt. Glue in place.
