Sweet Jacket and Bootie Set

For babies 0-12 months, this jacket and bootie knitting pattern from Patons is precious for any special occasion. It makes a great gift for those who are expecting a little one.

Sweet Cardigan and Bootie Set

MATERIALS

  • Patons® Astra (50 g/1.75 oz)
    Matinee Jacket
  • 0-3 months: 2 balls
  • 3-6 months: 3 balls
  • 6-12 months: 3 balls
    Booties
  • 0-3 months: 1 ball
  • 6-12 months: 1 ball
  • Knitting Needles: sizes 3¼ mm (U.S. 3) and 4 mm (U.S. 6)
  • Circular Knitting Needle: size 4 mm (U.S. 6)  76 cm long or size needed to obtain tension.
  • 3 buttons for Jacket.

SIZES
Matinee Jacket
Chest measurement

  • 0-3 months: 16 ins [41 cm]
  • 3-6 months: 18 ins [46] cm]
  • 6-12 months: 21 ins [53.5 cm]

Finished chest

  • 0-3 months: 19 ins [48 cm]
  • 3-6 months: 21½ ins [55 cm]
  • 6-12 months: 23 ins [58 cm]

Booties

  • 0-3 or 6-12 months

TENSION
22 sts and 30 rows = 4 ins [10 cm] in stocking st with larger needles.

ABBREVIATION
M1 = make one st by picking up horizontal loop lying before next st and working into back of it.

INSTRUCTIONS
The instructions are written for smallest size. If changes are necessary for larger sizes, the instructions will be written thus ( ).

MATINEE JACKET
With smaller needles, and beg at neck edge, cast on 41 (45-59) sts.
1st row: K1. *P1. K1. Rep from * to end of row.
Last row forms seed st pat.
Work a further 6 rows in seed st pat, thus ending with WS facing for next row.
Next row: K1. P0 (0-1). *M1. P2. Rep from * to last 2 (2-3) sts. M1. P1 (1-2). K1. 61 (67- 87) sts.
Change to larger needles and shape raglans as follows:
1st row: (RS). K9 (11-15). yfwd. K1. yfwd. K9 (9-13). yfwd. K1. yfwd. K21 (23-27). yfwd. K1. yfwd. K9 (9-13). yfwd. K1. yfwd. K9 (11- 15). 69 (75-95) sts.
2nd and every following alt row: K1. Purl to last st. K1.
3rd row: K10 (12-16). yfwd. K1. yfwd. K11 (11-15). yfwd. K1. yfwd. K23 (25-29). yfwd. K1. yfwd. K11 (11-15). yfwd. K1. yfwd. K10 (12-16). 77 (83-103) sts.
Cont in this manner, inc as set on every following alt row until the row “K23 (27-32). yfwd. K1. yfwd. K37 (41-47). yfwd. K1. yfwd. K49 (55-61). yfwd. K1. yfwd. K37 (41-47). yfwd. K1. yfwd. K23 (27-32)” has been worked (taking sts onto circular needle when necessary), thus ending with WS facing for next row. 181 (203-231) sts.
Next row: K1. Purl to last st. K1.
Now work Left Front as follows:
Next row: (RS). K25 (29-34). Turn.
Next row: K1. Purl to last st. K1.
***Beg with a knit row, work in stocking st, shaping side seam edge by inc 1 st at side edge of next and every following alt row until there are 29 (33-39) sts. Work 13 (19-21) rows even, thus ending with RS facing for next row.
Proceed in Border Pat as follows:
1st to 4th rows:Work in seed st pat as before.
5th row: Knit.
6th row: K1. Purl to last st. K1.
7th row: Knit.
8th row: K1 (3-2). *P3. K5. Rep from * to last 4 (6-5) sts. P3. K1 (3-2).
9th to 11th rows: As 5th to 7th rows.
12th to 14th rows:Work in seed st as before.
These 14 rows complete Border Pat.
Cast off loosely in pat.***
Rejoin yarn to rem sts and work First Sleeve as follows:
**Next row: (RS). K39 (43-49). Turn.
Next row: K1. Purl to last st. K1.
Cont on these sts in stocking st, shaping sides by dec 1 st at each end of 9th (3rd-next) and every following 4th row until 33 sts rem. Work 2 (2-0) rows in stocking st, thus ending with WS facing for next row.
Next row: Purl, dec 2 sts evenly across. 31 sts.
Work rows 1 to 7 of Border Pat as given for Left Front.
8th row: P1. *K5. P3. Rep from * to last 6 sts. K5. P1.
Work rows 9 to 14 of Border Pat as given for Left Front.
Cast off loosely in pat.**
Rejoin yarn to rem sts and work Back as follows:
Next row: (RS). K53 (59-65). Turn.
Next row: K1. Purl to last st. K1.
Cont on these sts, shaping sides by inc 1 st at each end of next and every following alt row until there are 61 (67-75) sts.
Cont even in stocking st for a further 13 (19-21) rows, thus ending with RS facing for next row.
Work rows 1 to 7 of Border Pat as given for Left Front.
8th row: K5 (4-4). *P3. K5. Rep from * to last 8 (7-7) sts. P3. K5 (4-4).
Work rows 9 to 14 of Border Pat as given for Left Front.
Cast off loosely in pat.
Rejoin yarn to rem sts and work Second Sleeve from ** to ** as given for First Sleeve.
Rejoin yarn to rem sts and work Right Front as follows:
Next row: Knit.
Next row: K1. Purl to last st. K1.
Work from *** to *** as given for Left Front.

FINISHING
Sew side and sleeve seams.
Buttonband: With smaller needles, cast on 5 sts and proceed in seed st pat until band, when slightly stretched, fits up Left Front from caston edge to top of neck edge, sewing in place as you work. Cast off in pat. Mark positions for 3 buttons on band, first to come level with end of raglan shaping, last to come ½ inch [1 cm] below neck edge, and rem one spaced evenly between.
Buttonhole Band: With smaller needles, cast on 5 sts and work in seed st pat until band, when slightly stretched, fits up Right Front from cast-on edge to top of neck edge, sewing in place as you work, with the addition of 3 buttonholes to correspond to button markers.
Cast off in pat.
Make buttonhole: (RS). Pat 2 sts. yfwd. Work 2tog. Pat 1.
Sew on buttons to correspond to buttonholes.

BOOTIES
With smaller needles, cast on 19 (27) sts.
1st and every following alt row: (WS). Knit.
2nd row: K1. [M1. K8 (12). M1. K1] twice. 23 (31) sts.
4th row: K1. [M1. K10 (14). M1. K1] twice. 27 (35) sts.
6th row: K1. [M1. K12 (16). M1. K1] twice. 31 (39) sts.
8th row: K1. [M1. K14 (18). M1. K1] twice. 35 (43) sts.
10th row: K1. [M1. K16 (20). M1. K1] twice. 39 (47) sts.
Knit 7 (9) rows, thus ending with RS facing for next row.
Shape instep: Next row: K24 (28). K2tog. Turn.
Next row: K10. K2tog. Turn.
Rep last row 14 (16) times more.
Next row: Knit to end of row. 23 (29) sts.
Next row: Knit, inc 2 sts evenly across. 25 (31) sts.
Next row: K1. *yfwd. K2tog. K1. Rep from * to end of row.
Next row: Knit, inc 0 (2) sts evenly across. 25 (33) sts.
Change to larger needles and beg with a knit row, work in stocking st for 16 rows, thus ending with RS facing for next row.
Work in seed st pat for 4 rows. Cast off in pat.

FINISHING
Sew ankle and foot seams.
Twisted cord: (make 2). Cut 2 strands of yarn 43 ins [110 cm] long. With both strands tog hold one end and with someone holding other end, twist strands to the right until they begin to curl. Fold the 2 ends tog and tie in a knot so they will not unravel. The strands will now twist themselves together. Adjust length if desired.
Thread each cord through holes at ankle.
