Knit a dramatic "opera" wrap in luxurious yarn for your evenings out. Long Knit Wrap

Materials:

  • 6 balls Patons Shetland Chunky Yarn (100 g/3.5 oz) in Burgundy (MC)
  • 17 balls Patons Allure Yarn (50 g/1.75 oz) in Burgundy (Contrast A)
  • Size 12.75 mm (U.S. 17) circular knitting needle 36 ins [90 cm] long or size needed to obtain tension
  • Stitch holder

 

Gauge: 8 sts and 12½ rows = 4 ins [10 cm] with 1 strand of each yarn tog in stocking st.

 

Notes:

  • Wrap is worked in one piece using 2 strands of yarn throughout.
  • Abbreviations:  M1 = Make 1 st by picking up the horizontal strand lying before the next st and knitting into the back of the loop.

 

Instructions:
Size:  Approx 45½ ins [114.5 cm] wide and 32 ins [81.5 cm] long.

  1. With one strand of each yarn held tog, cast on 91 sts loosely. Do not join.
     
  2. Working back and forth, proceed as follows:  Knit 3 rows (garter st), noting that 1st row is WS. Place first set of markers at each end of last row.
     
  3. Proceed as follows:  1st row: (RS). Knit.
     
  4. 2nd row: K3. Purl to last 3 sts. K3.
     
  5. Rep last 2 rows until work from beg measures 31 ins [78.5 cm], ending with RS facing for next row.
     
  6. Next row: Knit
     
  7. Next row: K3. P34. K17. P34. K3.
     
  8. Rep last 2 rows once more, ending with RS facing for next row.
     
  9. Back Neck Opening: Next row: K40. Cast off 11 sts (neck opening). Knit to end of row. Place second set of markers at each end of row.
     
  10. Working across 40 sts for Left Front, proceed as follows:
     
  11. Next row: K3. Purl to last 3 sts. K3.
     
  12. Left Front Neck shaping: 1st row: (RS). K3. M1. Knit to last 3 sts. K3.
     
  13. 2nd row: K3. Purl to last 3 sts. K3. Rep last 2 rows twice more. 43 sts.
     
  14. Next row: (RS). Knit.
     
  15. Next row: K3. Purl to last 3 sts. K3.
     
  16. Rep last 2 rows until Front, from 2nd set of markers measures same length as Back to 1st set of markers, ending with RS facing for next row.
     
  17. Knit 3 rows. Cast off loosely.
     
  18. With WS facing, join yarn to 40 sts on st holder. K3. Purl to last 3 sts. K3.
     
  19. Right Front Neck shaping: 1st row: Knit to last 3 sts. M1. K3.
     
  20. 2nd row: K3. Purl to last 3 sts. K3.
     
  21. Rep last 2 rows twice more. 43 sts.
     
  22. Next row: (RS). Knit.
     
  23. Next row: K3. Purl to last 3 sts. K3.
     
  24. Rep last 2 rows until Front, from 2nd set of markers measures same length as Back to 1st set of markers ending with RS facing for next row.
     
  25. Knit 3 rows. Cast off loosely.
     
  26. Tassel: (make 6). Cut a piece of cardboard 6 ins [15 cm] wide. Wind 1 strand of MC and 1 strand of A around cardboard 20 times. Break yarn leaving a long end and thread end through a needle. Slip needle through all loops and tie tightly. Remove cardboard and wind yarn tightly around loops ¾ inch [2 cm] below fold. Fasten securely. Cut through rem loops and trim ends evenly. Sew tassels at each corner of Wrap.
