This knit jacket from Bernat Yarns is perfect for someone who likes options. You can create it with a collar or with a hood. This is a great free knitting pattern as you can make many and have them still look different.

  • HOODED VERSION

Sizes 5.5 mm (U.S. 9) and 6 mm (U.S. 10) knitting needles or size needed to obtain gauge. 2 st holders for Hooded Version. 3 st holders for Collar Version. Separating zipper.

GAUGE
15 sts and 20 rows = 4 ins [10 cm] in stocking st with larger needles.

ABBREVIATIONS
Alt = Alternate.
Beg = Beginning.
Cont = Continue.
Dec = Decrease.
Inc = Increase 1 stitch in next stitch by knitting into front and back of next stitch.
K = Knit.
K2tog = Knit 2 stitches together.
P = Purl.
Psso = Pass slipped stitch over.
P2tog = Purl 2 stitches together.
P2togtbl = Purl 2 stitches together through back loops.
Rep = Repeat.
Rem = Remaining.
RS = Right side.
St(s) = Stitch(es).
Sl1 = Slip next stitch knitwise.
WS =Wrong side.

Steps:
The instructions are written for smallest size. If changes are necessary for larger sizes the instructions will be written thus ( ). when only one number is given, it applies to all sizes. For ease in working, circle all numbers pertaining to your size.

BACK
With smaller needles, cast on 67 (75- 83-91-107-123) sts.
1st row: (RS). K1. *P1. K1. Rep from * to end of row.
2nd row: P1. *K1. P1. Rep from * to end of row.
Rep these 2 rows of (K1. P1) ribbing for 4½ ins [11.5 cm], ending with a 2nd row.

Change to larger needles and proceed in stocking st until work from beg measures 14 (14-14½-14½-15-15½) ins [35.5 (35.5-37-37-38-39.5) cm], ending with a purl row.
Shape raglans: Cast off 2 (2-2-2-4-6) sts beg next 2 rows. 63 (71-79-87-99- 111) sts.
Size XS/S only: Next row: K2. K2tog. Knit to last 4 sts. Sl1. K1. psso. K2.
Work 3 rows even.

Change to larger needles and proceed in stocking st for 4 rows.
Inc 1 st each end of needle on next and following 4th rows to 53 (55-55-57- 59-61) sts, then every following 6th row to 61 (63-63-65-69-71) sts.
Cont even until work from beg measures 18 (18½-18½-18-17½-17) ins [45.5 (47-47-45.5-44.5-43) cm], ending with a purl row.
Shape raglans: Cast off 2 (2-2-2-4-6) sts beg next 2 rows. 57 (59-59-61-61- 59) sts.

Rep last 4 rows to 14 sts, ending with a purl row.

R
IGHT POCKET
With larger needles, cast on 22 sts.
Work 7 rows in stocking st.
Next row: (WS). Cast off 4 sts. Purl to end of row.
Next row: Knit to last 4 sts. Sl1. K1. psso. K2.
Work 3 rows even.
Rep last 4 rows to 14 sts, ending with a purl row.
Next row: Knit to last 4 sts. Sl1. K1. psso. K2.
Next row: Purl.
Rep last 2 rows to 6 sts, ending with a purl row. Cast off.
Pocket edging: With RS facing and smaller needles, pick up and knit 27 sts along diagonal edge of Pocket.
Beg on a 2nd row, work 3 rows in (K1. P1) ribbing as given for Back. Cast off in ribbing. Sew side edge of ribbing to 4 cast off sts.


FINISHING

Pin garment pieces to measurements and cover with damp cloth leaving cloth to dry.
Sew raglan seams.
Collar Version only: Collar:With RS of work facing and smaller needles, pick up and knit 17 (17-18-18-18-19) sts up right front neck edge. K7 (7-7- 9-9-9) from right sleeve st holder. K25 (25-27-27-29-31) from back st holder. K7 (7-7-9-9-9) from left sleeve st holder. Pick up and knit 17 (17-18- 18-18-19) sts down left front neck edge. 73 (73-77-81-83-87) sts.
Beg on a 2nd row, work 5 ins [12.5 cm] in (K1. P1) ribbing as given for Back. Cast off in ribbing.
Hooded Version only: Hood: With smaller needles, cast on 109 sts. Work 4 rows in (K1. P1) ribbing as given for Back, inc 1 st at center of last row. 110 sts.
Change to larger needles and proceed in stocking st until work from beg measures 2½ ins [6 cm], ending with a purl row.
Dec 1 st each end of next and following alt rows to 90 sts. Cont even until work from beg measures 10 (10-10½-10½- 10½-10½) ins [25.5 (25.5-26.5-26.5-26.5-26.5) cm], ending with a purl row. Divide rem sts onto 2 needles and graft center back seam. Sew shaped edges of Hood to neck edge having seam at center back neck.
Both Versions: Sew pockets in position to Fronts.
Front edging:With RS of work facing and smaller needles, pick up and knit 64 (64-66-66-66-68) sts along front edge.
Cast off knitwise (WS).
Sew side and sleeve seams. Sew zipper under front edging.
Collar Version only: Optional: Work running st embroidery with contrast yarn as shown in picture.
