Lace Capelet

A lacy knit capelet is a great way to wrap up in the transition to warmer months and the construction is a snap. Follow this capelet knitting pattern for a lovely addition to your wardrobe. This pattern is for intermediate level knitters.


Knit Lace Capelet


Materials:

  • RED HEART® “Soft Yarn®”: 2 (3) Balls 9520 Seafoam.
  • Circular Knitting Needles: 4mm [US 6] and 5mm [US 8] 32”.
  • 2 Double Pointed Needles: 4mm [US 6].
  • stitch markers
  • yarn needle

SIZE: Directions are for size Small/Medium; changes for sizes Large/Extra Large are in parentheses.
To Fit Bust: 32-40 (42-50)”.
Length: 12½ (14)”.

GAUGE: 17 sts = 4”; 23 rows = 4” in St st with larger needles. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size needle to obtain the gauge.

SPECIAL ABBREVIATIONS:
M1 (make one stitch) = Insert left hand needle into left side of stitch directly below last stitch worked and Knit into back of this thread.
ssk (slip, slip, knit) = Slip next 2 sts knitwise, one at a time, to right needle; insert point of left needle into the fronts of these 2 sts and knit them together from this position – 1 st decreased.
sk2p = Slip 1, K2tog, pass slipped st over the K2tog – 2 sts decreased.

LACE BORDER PATTERN (multiple of 8 sts):
Row 1 (Right Side): K4, * K2tog, yo, K6; repeat from * to last 4 sts; K2tog, yo, K2.
Row 2 and all Wrong Side rows: Purl.
Row 3: K3, K2tog, * yo, K1, yo, ssk, K3, K2tog; repeat from * to last 3 sts; yo, K1, yo, ssk.
Row 5: K2, K2tog, yo, * K3, yo, ssk, K1, K2tog, yo; repeat from * to last 4 sts; K4.
Row 7: K1, K2tog, yo, K2, * yo, ssk, K1, yo, sk2p, yo, K2; repeat from * to last 3 sts; yo, ssk, K1.
Row 9: K1, yo, ssk, K1, * [yo, ssk] twice, K1, yo, ssk, K1; repeat from * to last 4 sts; [yo, ssk] twice.
Row 11: K2, yo, ssk, * K1, [yo, ssk] twice, K1, yo, ssk; repeat from * to last 4 sts; K1, yo, ssk, K1.
Row 13: K3, yo, * ssk, K1, [yo, ssk] twice, K1, yo; repeat from * to last 5 sts; ssk, K1, yo, ssk.
Row 15: K1, yo, ssk, K1, * yo, ssk, K1, [yo, ssk] twice, K1; repeat from * to last 4 sts; yo, ssk, K2.
Row 17: K2, yo, ssk, * K1, yo, ssk, K1, [yo, ssk] twice; repeat from * to last 4 sts; K1, yo, ssk, K1.
Row 19: K1, yo, ssk, K1, * K2, yo ssk, K1, yo, ssk, K1; repeat from * to last 4 sts; K2, yo, ssk.
Row 21: K4, * K2tog, yo, K1, yo, ssk, K3; repeat from * to ast 4 sts; K2tog, yo, K2.
Row 23: K3, K2tog, * yo, K3, yo, ssk, K1, K2tog; repeat from * to last 3 sts; yo, K3.
Row 25: K1, yo, sk2p, yo, * K5, yo, sk2p, yo; repeat from * to last 4 sts; K4.
Row 26: Purl.
Rows 1-26 form Lace Border Pattern.

NOTE: Garment is worked in one piece from the neck down. Circular needles are used to accommodate the large number of sts. Work back and forth in rows. Do not join.

CAPELET: Begin at top edge with smaller circular needles, cast on 86 sts. Work in Garter st (K every row) for 1”.
Change to larger needles.
Row 1 (Right Side): K5, pm, K to last 5 sts, pm, K5. Slip markers every row.
Row 2: K5, P to last 5 sts, K5.
Increase Row 3: K5, [K2, M1, K1, M1] 24 (21) times, [K2 (1), M1] 1 (11) times, K7 – 49 (53) sts inc - 135 (139) sts.
Rows 4-8: Keeping 5 sts at each end in Garter st, work even in St st over center sts.
Increase Row 9: K5, [K3, M1, K2, M1] 24 (20) times, [K2, M1] 1 (13) times, K8 – 49 (53) sts inc - 184 (192) sts.
Rows 10-16: Repeat Row 4.
Increase Row 17: K5, [K4, M1, K3, M1] 23 (19) times, [K3, M1] 3 (15) times, K9 – 49 (53) sts inc - 233 (245) sts.
Rows 18-32: Repeat Row 4.
Increase Row 33: K5, [K5, M1, K4, M1] 22 (18) times, [K4, M1] 5 (17) times, K10 – 49 (53) sts inc – 282 (298) sts.
Row 34: Repeat Row 2. Piece measures approximately 7”.

Size L/XL Only: Repeat Row 4 for 1½” more, end wrong side row.

All Sizes-Establish Border Pattern (Right Side): K5, work Row 1 of Lace Border Pattern over next 272 (288) sts, K5. Keeping 5 sts at each end in Garter st, work Rows 2-26 of Lace Border Pattern over center sts. Change to smaller needle. Work in Garter st for 1”, end wrong side row. Bind off all sts.

FINISHING-I-cord (Make 2): With double pointed needles, cast on 3 sts. * K3, do not turn work. Slide sts to right end of needle, pulling yarn to tighten. Repeat from * until cord measures 16”. Cut yarn leaving a 4” tail. Thread yarn tail onto yarn needle and draw through 3 sts on needle to secure. Sew I-cord to garment, placing one at each side ½” from top edge. Make knot at other end of cord. Weave in ends.
