Double Lapel Sweater JacketBy: Susan Shildmyer for Caron Yarn This experienced sweater jacket knitting pattern is sure to impress. The sweater knitting pattern creates button-up jacket with an intricate double-lapel front.
Materials: Small (Medium, Large, X-Large)
FINISHED MEASUREMENTS Small (Medium, Large, X-Large)
Folded Length: 24 (26, 26 3/4, 27 1/2)”
GAUGE 18 sts and 24 rows = 4”/10 cm in St st 25 sts and 24 rows = 4”/10 cm in Woven Cable
STITCHES USED Stockinette stitch (St st) C10B (Cable 10 Back): Slip 5 sts onto cable needle and hold in back, k5, then k5 from cable needle. C10F (Cable 10 Front): Slip 5 sts onto cable needle and hold in front, k5, then k5 from cable needle. Woven Cable (multiple of 15 sts + 4) Row 1 (RS): Knit. Row 2: Purl. Row 3: K2, C10F, *k5, C10F; repeat from * to last 7 sts, k7. Rows 4, 6 and 8: Purl. Rows 5 and 7: Knit. Row 9: K7, C10B, *k5, C10B; repeat from * to last 2 sts, k2. Row 10: Purl. Row 11: Knit. Row 12: Purl. Repeat rows 1-12 for pat.
NOTE Garment is knit from shoulders to hem for the vest portion, then reverse and knit from hem to shoulders for sweater portion. Seams and border pickup are reversed at the fold and the vest is folded back over the sweaters with the sweater sleeves pulled through the vest armholes.
BACK Using straight needles, cast on 94 (105, 110, 116) sts. (RS) Knit. (WS) Purl, inc 30 (34, 44, 53) sts evenly across row – 124 (139, 154, 169) sts. (RS) Beg Woven Cable at Row 3 and work even until piece measures 24 (26, 26 3/4, 27 1/2)” from beg, end with a RS row. Next row (WS): Purl, dec 34 (35, 44, 53) sts evenly across row, place marker—90 (104, 110, 116) sts. Establish St st pat: (WS): Purl. Shape sides (RS) Dec 1 st each side of this row, then every 6 (6, 8, 8) rows 8 (10, 9, 8) times—72 (82, 90, 98) sts. (RS): Inc 1 st each side this row, then every 4 (4, 6, 6) rows 5 (4, 4, 4) times—84 (92, 100, 108) sts. Work even until piece measures 16 (17, 17 1/2, 18)” from marker, end with a WS row. Shape armholes (RS) Bind off 5 (5, 6, 7) sts at beg of next 2 rows, then 1 (2, 2, 2) sts at beg of following 2 rows—72 (78, 84, 90) sts. (RS) Dec 1 st each side every other row 4 (5, 6, 7) times—64 (68, 72, 76) sts. Work even until armhole measures 7 3/4 (8 1/2, 8 3/4, 9)”, end with a WS row. Place marker each side of center 22 (22, 24, 24) sts for neck. Shape shoulders and neck (RS): Bind off 6 sts at beg of next 2 rows, then 5 (6, 6, 7) sts at beg of next 4 rows; AT THE SAME TIME, on first row of shoulder shaping, work across to marker, join a second ball of yarn and bind off center sts, work to end. Working both sides at same time, bind off at each neck edge 2 (2, 3, 3) sts once, then 3 sts once.
LEFT FRONT Using straight needles, cast on 37 (44, 47, 50) sts. Knit 1 row. (WS) Purl, inc 12 (20, 32, 44) sts evenly across row—49 (64, 79, 94) sts. (RS) Beg Woven Cable at Row 3 and work even until piece measures 24 (26, 26 3/4, 27 1/2)” from beg, end with a RS row. Next row (WS): Purl, dec 13 (21, 33, 45) sts evenly across row—36 (43, 46, 49) sts. Place marker. Shape side (RS) Dec 1 st at beg of this row, then at same edge every 6 (6, 8, 8) rows 8 (10, 9, 8) times—27 (32, 36, 40) sts. Work even for 8 (8, 12, 12) rows, end with a WS row. (RS) Inc 1 st at beg of this row, then at same edge every 4 (4, 6, 6) rows 5 (4, 4, 4) times—33 (37, 41, 45) sts. Shape armhole (RS) Bind off 5 (5, 6, 7) sts at beg of next row, then 1 (2, 2, 2) sts at beg o following RS row—27 (30, 33, 36) sts. (RS) Dec 1 st at beg of every RS row 4 (5, 6, 7) times—23 (25, 27, 29) sts. Work as for back until armhole measures 4 ½ (5, 5, 5 1/2)” from beg, end with a RS row. Place marker. Shape neck and shoulder (WS): At neck edge, dec 1 st every other row 4 (4, 6, 6) times, then every 4 rows 3 times--16 (18, 18, 20) Work even until armhole measures same as back to shoulder, end with a WS row. Shape shoulder as for back.
RIGHT FRONT Work as for left front, reversing shaping.
SLEEVES Using straight needles, cast on 40 (48, 52, 56) sts. (RS) Work in k1, p1 rib until piece measures 3 1/2 (4, 4, 4 1/2)” from beg (measures when rib is slightly stretched), end with a WS row. Place marker. (RS) Knit. (WS) Purl, inc 9 (16, 12, 23) sts evenly across row—49 (64, 64, 79) sts. (RS) Beg Woven Cable on Row 3 and work even until piece measures 2 1/2 (3, 3, 3 1/2)” from marker, end with a RS row. Shape sleeve Inc 1 st each side of this row, every 4 rows 12 (12, 20, 20) times, then every 6 rows 9 (8, 3, 1) times working new sts into Woven Cable as established—93 (106, 112, 123) sts. Work even until piece measures 19 1/2 (21, 21 1/2, 22)” from marker, end with a WS row. Shape cap (RS) Bind off 5 (5, 6, 7) sts at beg of next 2 rows, then 1 (2, 2, 2) sts at beg of next 2 rows—81 (92, 96, 105) sts. (RS) Dec 1 st each side every row 26 (28, 30, 32) times, end with a WS row—29 (36, 36, 41) sts. (RS) Knit, dec 7 (10, 10, 11) sts evenly across row—22 (26, 26, 30) sts. (WS) Bind off 4 (5, 5, 6) sts at beg of next 2 rows. Bind off rem 14 (16, 16, 18) sts.
FINISHING Block pieces to measurements. Sew shoulder seams of vest.. Vest Armbands Measure 9 (10, 10, 10 1/2)” from shoulder seam down side seam on vest and place markers. With RS facing, using straight needles pick up and k 98 (110, 110, 118) sts along back and front armhole. Work in k1, p1 rib for 6 (8, 8, 10) rows. Bind off loosely in rib. On sweater, set in sleeves; sew sleeve and side seams. On vest, sew armband seams. Note: Reverse stitching to the WS at lower side markers.
COLLAR With RS facing, using circular needle and beg at left front neck edge of sweater, pick up and k 68 (79, 79, 86) sts around neck. Do not join. (RS) K2, k f&b 68 (75, 75, 83) times, k1 (2, 2, 1)—139 (154, 154, 169) sts. (WS) Beg with row 2, work even in Woven Cable until collar measures 9 (10, 10, 11)”. Work in k1, p1 rib for 4 rows. Bind off loosely in rib. Place markers for buttons on left front with first one 6” from lower edge, last one 1” from marker at beg of neck shaping and rem 4 evenly spaced between. Place markers for buttonholes opposite button markers on right front.
FRONT BAND Note: Because sweater is reverse of vest, sts are picked up from sweater fronts as if to purl. With RS facing, using circular needle, pick up and k44 (48, 48, 52) sts along left collar edge, 98 (100, 104, 112) sts on left front edge, 108 (116, 120, 124) sts along left vest edge, 26 (26, 30, 30) sts along vest back neck, 108 (116, 120, 124) sts along right vest edge, pick up as if to purl and knit 98 (100, 104, 112) sts along right front sweater edge, pick up and k44 (48, 48, 52) sts on right front collar edge—526 (554, 574, 606) sts. Do not join. Work even in k1, p1 rib for 3 3/4 (4, 4, 4 1/2)” when slightly stretched; AT THE SAME TIME, when band measures 1 3/4 (2, 2, 2 1/4)” from beg, work buttonholes as follows: *Work to marker, k2tog, yo; repeat from * for rem buttonholes, work to end. Bind off loosely in pat. Sew buttons opposite buttonholes. Using yarn needle, weave in ends. Fold vest up and pull sleeves through armbands, aligning shoulder seams.
