Shine On Hat and Scarf

If you know it's going to be a chilly winter, you'll want to get started on this Shine On Hat and Scarf pattern from Red Heart Yarn as soon as possible. RED HEART® Stardust®: 1 ball 1701 Pink for Hat; 2 balls for Scarf.

Susan Bates® Knitting Needles: 3.75mm [US 5].
Susan Bates® Circular Knitting Needles: 3.5mm [US 4] and 3.75mm [US 5] - 16" (41 cm) .
Susan Bates® Double Pointed Needles: 3.75mm [US 5].

Yarn needle, stitch marker.


GAUGE: 50 sts = 4" (10 cm); 30 rows = 4" (10 cm) with larger needles in K3, P2 ribbing unstretched. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size needles to obtain the gauge.

(1 Super Fine) RED HEART® Stardust®; Art. E783 available in 1.76 oz (50 g), 191 yd (175 m) balls.

Hat directions are for Small; changes for Medium are in parentheses.

Scarf measures 4" (10 cm) wide x 48" (122 cm) long.
Finished Hat Circumference: 18 (20)”.



SCARF
With larger needles cast on 50 sts.
Row 1 (Right Side): * K3, p2; repeat from * across.
Row 2: * K2, p3; repeat from * across.
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 for ribbing until piece measures 48" (122 cm). Bind off in ribbing. Weave in ends.

HAT
With smaller needle cast on 100 (110) sts; join being careful not to twist sts, place marker.
Round 1: * K3, p2; repeat from * around.
Repeat Round 1 until piece measures 1½". Change to larger needle and Knit every round until 4 (5½)" from beginning.

Shape Crown
Note: Change to double point needles when there are too few sts for circular needle.

Next Round: [K8 (9), k2tog] 10 times – 90 (100) sts.
Knit 2 rounds even.
Next Round: [K7 (8), k2tog] 10 times – 80 (90) sts.
Knit 2 rounds even.
Next Round: [K6 (7), k2tog] 10 times – 70 (80) sts.
Knit 2 rounds even.
Next Round: [K5 (6), k2tog] 10 times – 60 (70) sts.
Knit 2 rounds even.
Next Round: [K4 (5), k2tog] 10 times – 50 (60) sts.
Knit 1 round even.
Next Round: [K3 (4), k2tog] 10 times – 40 (50) sts.
Knit 1 round even.
Next Round: [K2 (3), k2tog] 10 times – 30 (40) sts.
Knit 1 round even.
Next Round: [K1 (2), k2tog] 10 times – 20 (30) sts.

Medium Hat Only
Knit 1 round even.
Next Round: [K1, k2tog] 10 times – 20 sts.

Both Sizes
Next Round:
[K2tog] 10 times – 10 sts.

Break yarn leaving a 12" (30 cm) tail. Thread tail through remaining sts using yarn needle. Pull tight and secure. Weave in all ends.
