Kiel Scarf

This retro-looking scarf is light enough for fall, but bulky enough for winter. Make Kiel Scarf for a free easy knit scarf you're sure to love!


 

Materials:
 

  • Naturally Caron.com Country 75% Microdenier acrylic, 25% Merino wool; 3 oz/100 g, 185 yds/170 m ball): #0019 Vicuna (A), 30z/85g, #0013 Spruce (B), 3oz/85g
     
  • One pair US size 9 (5.5 mm) needles or size to obtain gauge
     
  • Yarn needle
     
  • Two stitch markers

Instructions:
FINISHED MEASUREMENTS

Approximately 7”/18cm wide by 54"/137cm long


GAUGE

In Soft Texture patt (cluster st) 18 sts and 22 rows= 4”/10 cm (after blocking)

In Garter st, 18 sts and 29 rows = 4”/10 cm


STITCHES USED

Garter stitch: Knit every row.

Cluster-4 Variation stitch (Cluster-4 V): Drop extra wrap off needle, slip 4 sts with yarn in back, [pass yarn to front, slip 4 same sts back to left needle, pass yarn in back, slip 4 same sts back to right needle] twice.

 

NOTES

Scarf is worked widthwise changing color every 2 rows.

Carry A and B up right hand edge when not in use; but must be carried very loosely.

 

SCARF

Work bands as follows, keeping first 2 and last 2 sts in garter st.

First Soft Texture band

Using A, CO 32 sts.

Row 1 (WS): Work 2 garter sts, pm (place marker), *k4 wrapping yarn twice around needle, k4; rep from * two times more, k4 wrapping yarn twice around needle, pm, work 2 garter sts.

Row 2 (RS): With B, work 2 garter sts, sm (slip marker), *cluster-4 V, k4; rep from * two times more, cluster-4 V, sm, work 2 garter sts.

Row 3: Work 2 garter sts, sm, * k4, k4 wrapping yarn twice around needle; rep from * two times more, k4, sm, work 2 garter sts.

Row 4: With A, work 2 garter sts, sm, *k4, cluster-4 V; rep from * two times more, k4, sm, work 2 garter sts.

Rows 5-24: rep Rows 1-4 .

Garter st band

Row 1 (WS): With A, garter st.

Rows 2 and 3: With B, garter st.

Row 4: With A, garter st.

Rows 5 – 20: Rep Rows 1-4.

Row 21: Rep Row 1.

Row 22: Rep Row 2.

Inner Soft texture band

Row 1 (WS): With B, work 2 garter sts, sm, *k4, k4 wrapping yarn twice around needle; rep from * two times more, k4, sm, work 2 garter sts.

Row 2: With A, work 2 garter sts, sm, *k4, cluster-4 V; rep from * two times more, k4, sm, work 2 garter sts.

Row 3: Work 2 garter sts, sm, *k4 wrapping yarn twice around needle, k4; rep from * two times more, k4 wrapping yarn twice around needle, sm, work 2 garter sts.

Row 4: With B, work 2 garter sts, sm, *cluster-4 V, k4; rep from * two times more, cluster-4 V, sm, work 2 garter sts.

Rows 5-20: Rep Rows 1-4.

Row 21: Rep Row 1.

Row 22: Rep Row 2.

Rep garter st band and Soft Texture band five more times. Work garter st band once more.

Last Soft texture band

Row 1 (WS): With B, work 2 garter sts, sm, *k4, k4 wrapping yarn twice around needle; rep from * two times more, k4, sm, work 2 garter sts.

Row 2: With A, work 2 garter sts, sm, * k4, cluster-4 V; rep from * 2 times more, k4, sm, work 2 garter sts.

Row 3: Work 2 garter sts, sm, * k4 wrapping yarn twice around needle, k4; rep from * two times more, k4 wrapping yarn twice around needle, sm, work 2 garter sts.

Row 4: With B, work 2 garter sts, sm, * cluster-4 V, k4; rep from * 2 times more, cluster-4 V, sm, work 2 garter sts.

Rows 5 -24: Rep Rows 1-4.

Row 25: With B, garter st.

Row 26: With A, garter st.

BO.

FINISHING

Block piece to measurements. Using yarn needle, weave in all ends.
