Textured Block Afghan

This afghan knitting pattern creates a warm cover with wonderful texture and coordinating blocks of color. The classic fringe on this knit afghan with both colors is a nice touch.

 
Materials:

• Yarn: Bernat Super Value (Solids: 197 g/7 oz or Ombres: 142 g/5 oz) Main Color (MC) (Solids) 3 balls, Contrast A (Solids) 3 balls OR Main Color (MC) (Ombres) 5 balls, Contrast A (Ombres) 5 balls
• Knitting Needles: Size 5.5 mm (U.S. 9) or size needed to obtain gauge.

Gauge: 17 sts and 28 rows = 4 ins 10 cm in box st pat.

Measurements: Approx 47 x 58 ins 119.5 x 147.5 cm.

Instructions:

Box St Pat
1st row: (RS). K2. P2. Rep from to end of row.
2nd row: K2. P2. Rep from to end of row.
3rd row: P2. K2. Rep from to end of row.
4th row: P2. K2. Rep from to end of row.
These 4 rows form box st pat.

First Strip (make 3)
With MC cast on 40 sts.
Work 68 rows in box st pat.
69th row: (RS). With A, knit.
Beg with a 2nd row work 67 rows in box st pat.
137th row: With MC, knit.
Beg with a 2nd row work 67 rows in box st pat.
205th row: With A, knit.
Beg with a 2nd row work 67 rows in box st pat.
273rd row: With MC, knit.
Beg with a 2nd row work 67 rows in box st pat.
341st row: With A, knit.
Beg with a 2nd row work 67 rows in box st pat. Cast off in pat.

Second Strip (make 2)
Work as given for first strip substituting A for MC and MC for A.

Sew strips alternating first strip and second strip.

Fringe: Cut 13 inch 33 cm lengths of MC and A. Taking 3 strands of each color tog, knot into fringe on short ends of Afghan 2 ins 5 cm apart as illustrated. Trim fringe evenly.
