Cake Icing Afghan

Pastel stripes give this Cake Icing Afghan a look that's sure to please girls of all ages.  Great for summer and spring decor, this easy knit afghan pattern is great for beginners and is a fun way to play around with color.  You could also make this knit afghan for a new baby or use it to add some colors to your living room.  Inspired by popular icing colors, this afghan is sure to satisfy your sweet tooth!

Cake Icing Afghan

Materials:

  • 3 balls Lily® Sugar ’n Cream (Solids: 70.9 g/2.5 oz; 109 m/120 yds) in Hot Green (A)
  • 3 balls Lily® Sugar ’n Cream (Solids: 70.9 g/2.5 oz; 109 m/120 yds) in Mod Blue (C)
  • 3 balls Lily® Sugar ’n Cream (Solids: 70.9 g/2.5 oz; 109 m/120 yds) in Hot Purple (D)
  • 3 balls Lily® Sugar ’n Cream (Solids: 70.9 g/2.5 oz; 109 m/120 yds) in Mod Pink (F)
  • 3 balls Lily® Sugar ’n Cream (Solids: 70.9 g/2.5 oz; 109 m/120 yds) in Tangerine (G)
  • 3 balls Lily® Sugar ’n Cream Twists (56.7 g/2 oz; 86 m/95 yds) in Mod Twists (B)
  • 3 balls Lily® Sugar ’n Cream Twists (56.7 g/2 oz; 86 m/95 yds) in Motion Twists (E)
  • 5 mm (U.S. 8) circular knitting needle 36 ins [90 cm] long or size needed to obtain gauge

 

Gauge:  18 sts and 24 rows = 4 ins [10 cm] in stocking st.

 

Instructions:
Approx 46 x 55 ins [117 x 139.5 cm].

  1. With A, cast on 199 sts. Do not join in rnd. Working back and forth across needle in rows, knit 9 rows (garter st), noting first row is WS.
     
  2. **1st row: (RS). With B, K4. *K1. P1. Rep from * to last 5 sts. K5.
     
  3. Last row forms Seed St Pat and Garter St side edges.
     
  4. Rep last row 9 times more.
     
  5. Next row: (RS). With C, knit.
     
  6. Next row: K4. Purl to last 4 sts. K4.
     
  7. Rep last 2 rows 4 times more.
     
  8. With D, knit 10 rows Garter St.
     
  9. With E, work 10 rows Seed St.
     
  10. With F, knit 10 rows Garter St.
     
  11. Next row: (RS). With G, knit.
     
  12. Next row: K4. Purl to last 4 sts. K4.
     
  13. Rep last 2 rows 4 times more.
     
  14. With A, knit 10 rows Garter St.
     
  15. Rep from ** until Blanket from beg measures approx 54 ins [137 cm], ending with 10 rows of G.
     
  16. With A, knit 9 rows. Cast off knitwise (WS).
