Simple Sewn Star Pillow

Pretty pillows can instantly change the look of your space. Create a Simple Sewn Star Pillow or two and use them to cover your couch of bed. You only need chenille and burlap to start - soon, you'll be on your way to making easy home decor crafts.

  • 1/2 yard blue burlap
  • 1/2 yard white cotton fabric
  • Measuring tape
  • Scissors
  • 8-inch star pattern
  • White chenille bedspread (scrap)
  • Straight pins
  • Sewing machine
  • Stuffing
  • Hand sewing needle and thread

  1. Cut two 15-inch squares from blue burlap for the pillow cover and two, 15-inch squares from white cotton fabric for the pillow insert. Tip: An old sheet or tablecloth will work beautifully for an insert.

  2. Enlarge and print an 8-inch star pattern from your computer and cut out. I omitted this step and used an existing star shape from my pattern collection. Pin the star pattern to a white chenille bedspread and cut out.

  3. Place the two white cotton squares together and pin the edges. Sew around all of the edges using a 1/4-inch seam allowance and leaving a 5-inch opening in the center of one edge. Clip the corners and turn the insert right side out.
  4. Stuff the pillow insert and hand sew the opening closed.

  5. Stitch a zigzag stitch along all four edges of both burlap squares. This will prevent the edges from fraying with wear and tear, and allow you to keep your sanity when stitching the opening closed.
  6. Lay one burlap square on your work surface. Center the chenille star on the square and pin to secure. Set your sewing machine to a long straight stitch. Stitch the edges of the star to the burlap square 1/4 inch from the edge of the star.
  7. Place the two burlap squares together with the star sandwiched in between. Pin the edges. Sew around all four edges using a 1/2-inch seam allowance and leaving an 8-inch opening in the center of one edge. Clip the corners to remove bulk and turn right side out.

  8. Stuff the pillow insert through the opening and adjust so that the corners of the insert fit into the corners of the burlap cover. Hand sew the opening closed.
