Choose to make a simple potholder pattern or add some extra functionality with a handle. No matter which potholder pattern you decide to sew, this easy-to-follow tutorial is sure to transform your kitchen (and your cooking) after just an hour of sewing. This is a beginner sewing project that would be fantastic for a second or third project. This project does require you to sew rounded edges which can be difficult for a first time sewist.

Materials List

9 x 7 square inches of fabric A
7 x 5 square inches of fabric B
Insulated batting
Free Potholder Pattern (click to download)
Rotary cutter, ruler, and mat
Sewing essentials
505 spray or glue stick
Marking pen
Double fold bias tape

Instructions

Cut your rectangles. Cut 2 7 by 9 rectangles from fabric A. 1 rectangle from insulbrite and 1 from cotton batting. Cut out 2 using pattern of fabric B and 2 shapes from cotton batting.
Using glue stick or 505 spray make a sandwich with fabric A on the outside. Top stitch together in the desired pattern.
Iron fabric B pieces in half. Place cotton in between fabric. Using ruler and marking out topstitching and topstitch.
Pin pot holder tops into place. Zig zag stitch into place, and all around the potholder.
Cut a 6 inch piece of bias tape. Sew closed. Then sew to back of potholder for hanging loop.
Sew on bias tape to finish.

Did you ever go shopping to replace your pot holders to go with a new paint color or to change the look and not be able to find what you want and finally give up. I know I have and still am looking. I have thought of making my own but thought it would take too much of my time until I came across this video and tutorial. Once again Angel Peterson does an amazing job explaining how to make these very easily and I love that there are suggested links to go to to learn how to do each step if you are new to sewing it. And she explains how you can finish these pot holders two ways. So perfect and has made me motivated to make some and even give as gifts. Anyone else? Let's get making some and post those pictures.
