Reusable Market Tote Bag

Help the environment and ditch the plastic grocery bags in favor of reusable tote bags. Use this idea to help jazz up a boring tote bag with fabric paint, iron-on crystals and cherries fashion design.

Recycled Market Tote Bag

Materials:

  • Tulip® Soft Fabric Paint™
    • BI15784 Glacier White
    • BI15797 Lime
  • Tulip® Cordless Heat Setting Tool™
  • Tulip® Glam-It-Up!™ Iron-On Fashion Designs™
    • Cherries
  • Tulip® Glam-It-Up!™ Iron-On Crystals™
    • 300 Multi-color Pack
  • Pencil
  • Iron
  • Foil
  • Chalk pencil, gray
  • Paper towels
  • Green grocery bag from Whole Foods or other grocery store
  • Cardboard to fit inside bag and pocket
  • Blow dryer, optional
  • Quarter
  • Paintbrush, ½” flat
  • Pressing cloth
  • Crayon
  • Scissors

Instructions:

  1. Using scissors, cut bottom flap from front pocket.

  2. Insert cardboard into bag and pocket.

  3. Loosely cut around each Iron-On Fashion Design™. Arrange designs onto bag. Lightly trace around each leaf, using pencil to draw it slightly larger on bag. Remove designs. Trace around quarter to create dots randomly around bag.

  4. Squeeze separate puddles of Matte Lime and Matte Glacier White onto foil. Apply an even coat of Matte Glacier White to dots, using paintbrush. Let dry – a blow dryer will speed this step. Apply another coat of paint. Let dry.

  5. Apply two coats of Matte Lime to leaves and to center section of pocket. Let dry thoroughly after each coat.

  6. Place bag onto ironing board. Remove backing sheet from designs. Press designs onto bag, placing leaf of design over painted leaf. Set iron to medium setting. Cover design with pressing cloth – this is very important as bag might melt with direct heat from iron.

  7. Follow package instructions to iron each design into place. Let cool. Carefully remove clear sheet. Repeat procedure if needed to adhere entire design.
  8. Hold “Fresh” pattern face down onto window or light source. Trace along pattern, using chalk pencil.

  9. Position pattern chalk side down, near top of pocket. Use wooden end of pencil to re-trace over lines, transferring pattern to bag. Carefully lift corner to make sure it has transferred. If necessary, press harder along chalked lines. Remove design.

  10. Press crayon onto top of a red Iron-On Crystal™. It will hold Crystal just long enough to place on bag. Arrange two rows of crystals within lines of one letter.

  11. Prepare Cordless Heat-Setting Tool™ according to package instructions. Gently touch tip of tool onto top of each crystal for 5 to 6 seconds to adhere.

  12. Let crystal cool. Touch crystal with fingernail. If not adhered, add a few more seconds of heat. Repeat procedure to adhere crystals onto each letter.

  13. Remove any chalk lines using damp paper towel.

Good idea, the paint they start out with washes off after a few times.
