If your friend or family member is graduating, then you might be interested in making this kids school craft.  Use this ring complete with mortarboard as a napkin ring at a graduation party or maybe if you're the person graduating, consider it the last of your end of school year crafts.  Regardless, you will draw out some smiles with this fun project.

Materials:

DecoArt Products Required

  • Foam Paint
    •  FP09 - Black
  •  Foam marshmallow shape, Darice, Inc., 3-D shapes, #1035-80
  •  Scissors
  •  Lo-temp glue gun and glue sticks
  •  Craft knife
  • Black and two other colors of craft foam sheets (We used blue and yellow.)
  • 6' of antique gold embroidery floss (We used DMC #680.)

Steps:

  1. Cut one foam marshmallow in half lengthwise.

  2. Use Black to paint one marshmallow half; let it dry.

  3. Cut 1 1/4" square from black craft foam for top of mortarboard.

  4. Cut 3/4" x 6" strip from blue craft foam (or alternate school color); cut 1 1/4" x 6" strip from yellow (or secondary color). Center narrow strip over wider strip and glue together. Overlap 1/2" of ends of strip and glue together to form a ring.

  5. Glue cut side of painted marshmallow to top center of ring. Center and glue black foam square over top of marshmallow for cap shape.

  6. Fold floss in half and tie knot 1/2" from fold. Cut ends 1" from knot and untwist the strands of floss at ends.

  7. Use a small dot of glue to glue fold of floss at top center of cap. Place dot of Black paint over glue; let dry.

Tips

  • Remove any stickers or tags from surface before beginning.
  • Choose craft foam colors to match your school.
