Learn how to make an attractive and inexpensive bird feeder or bird bath with this project from Vicki O'Dell. All you need is a clay pot saucer, a grapevine wreath and jute rope.

Bird Feeder

Materials:

  • 6" clay saucer ($1.47)
  • 8" Grapevine Wreath ($1.00)
  • Jute (one roll of jute will make several of these!)

Materials

Instructions:

Make a "spider web" on the grapevine wreath with the jute. No need to go crazy with it. Just enough to hold the saucer in.

Jute Spider Web

Cut three lengths of jute to about 5 feet, center the jute on the grapevine wreath and tie a knot.

Lengths of Jute

Next, combine the lengths of jute so that there are three sections with two lengths in each section and braid...just like braiding hair. When you get near the end of the jute use a bulldog clip to hold it while you go on to braid two other lengths of jute. Space the three sections as evenly as possible so that the bird feeder/bath hangs fairly level.

Braiding

Gather all three sections of braided jute and tie in a knot at the top. Leave the braided jute long enough to allow the bird feeder/bath to hang.

Hang over a branch or a hook and fill with seed or water. I like the natural look, the price and simplicity. Of course, it'll look better in my back yard than it does here against the floor of my work area! :)
