DIY Fabric Flowers

By:

Learning how to make fabric flowers is a valuable crafting skill. Check out this video tutorial on DIY Fabric Flowers from Marti Wills and find out how easy it can be to craft a faux bloom for your next craft project. There's more than one way to make a fabric flower, but all of the options are equally entertaining. Use the fabric flowers you've made to embellish paper crafts, clothing, accessories, and more. With so many fabrics available to you, you can craft a flower to go with almost anything in your wardrobe.

DIY Fabric Flowers

Materials:

  • Scraps of felt and fabric – one of my favorites is Fairy Frost fabric because of the shimmer and wide variety of colors.
  • Needle & thread
  • Sizzix or spellbinders dies
  • Clover Yoyo maker template
  • Flower centers – buttons, rhinestones, skittles, etc.
  • Glue dots
  • Double sided sticky paper
  • Scissors

Instructions:

  1. Fabric & felt can be cut beautifully using the thick Sizzix dies and Spellbinders dies. Layer these for interesting texture and add a button for the center.

  2. Fabric yoyos make a great embellishment or addition to a layered embellishment and they are easy to make yourself.

  3. Place fabric face down in the yoyo maker plastic template, line up the notches and pop the top piece on.

  4. Trim the excess fabric off.

  5. Stitch through the notches all the way around and pop the fabric out of the template.

  6. Pull the thread so the material gathers and then put the needle and thread through the center and knot it on the back.

  7. Make a gathered ruffle-y flower with thin strips of fabric and a needle & thread.

  8. Make long stitches along the long edge of the fabric strip.

  9. Pull and the fabric will gather into a ruffle and roll into a circle.

  10. You can join the two ends for a one layer flower or with a longer piece you can twist it into a spiral so there is more than one layer. For the layered twist use a circle of double sided sticky paper to hold it in place.
