Add machine embroidery to a pair of socks with this simple technique from Sulky of America. Match your socks to the embroidery on your shirt. Kids will love the addition of smiling animals. Make a pair of jungle socks to match the Wild Jungle Shirts.

Materials:

  • Sewing Machine
  • Thread
  • Cuffed Socks
  • Sulky Sticky Stabilizer
  • Embroidered Motif
  • 2 mm Sulky Puffy Foam
  • Embroidery Hoop

Instructions:

  1. Hoop a piece of Sulky Sticky Stabilizer, shiny paper side up.

  2. Score and peel back the paper from an area (approximately 3" square) near the center of the hoop.

  3. Leaving the sock right side out, extend the cuff out flat and simply lay it on top of the exposed Sticky Stabilizer. Hand press it into place. (It doesn't matter if the toe of the sock is laying toward or away from you or off to the left, because you can rotate the design.) Just square it up as much as possible and it will be easy to match the pair.

  4. You should now have the sock cuff held in place in the hoop. Of course, you do not want to embroider through both layers of the cuff, so simply roll back the top layer, exposing the right side of the cuff that the Sticky Stabilizer is holding. That (inside layer) is the one that will be embroidered.

  5. There are several ways to secure the top layer out of the way. Hold it with your fingers, use pins, or tack stitch it back by machine.

  6. With the top layer out of your way, use the positioning arrows to center the embroidery on the cuff. Simply touch and run the embroidery of your choice. Don't forget to use your small Puffy Foam scraps to make the embrodiery on the socks stand out even more.

Remember... First, the top edge of the cuff as it is extended out on the stabilizer in the hoop is actually the bottom of the cuff when it is turned down for wearing. Change the size of the embroidery by changing the stitch width and length. Second, to make a right and left sock you must place on sock on the Sticky with the toe pointing right and the other with the toe pointing left. Mirror image the embroidery on the sock.
