Favorite Granny Square Crochet Projects
Now that you know how to make a granny square in crochet, here are some great projects to use your new skill. Granny squares require that you know how to crochet in the round. If you are new to crochet, check out our five-part Beginner's Guide to Crochet and watch videos to help you develop crochet skills.
- Though technically a granny hexagon, I had to include Attic24’s beautiful tutorial. The general concept is the same! She shows you how to make the hexagons and join them as you crochet (joining-as-you-go method) into a gorgeous blanket. I’m not sure if you are up to 16 different kinds of yarn, but you certainly have to check out this colorful creation.
- Granny squares become a hip cap/beret with a pattern from Head Huggers. She shows several variations in color and style.
- Little Purl of the Orient used granny squares to create a cozy cover for her daughter’s headboard. This is a great idea.
- Instead of yarn, use recycled plastic bags to crochet a granny square bag. My Recycled Bags shows you how.
- If recycled plastic is not your bag (hardy har hr), the Purse Workshop has an extensive tutorial for making this granny square purse.
- How about some Granny Square tortoises? Roman Sock shares a fabulous pdf for how to make these little cuties.

That headboard has to be the most beautiful granny squares project I have seen this year. After working on many crotchet projects, granny squares have been the easiest and they let you work with left over yarn from other projects which saves you some money. I cannot wait to make it!

Literally, the only thing I know how to crochet is a granny square. I never quite learned how to read crochet instructions. Thanks for the inspiration and ideas for putting those squares together in new ways. The beginners guide to crochet (linked above) is a valuable asset too.

I like using granny squares or pentagons or hexagons etc to make afghans But instead of making several small shapes I make one large one I take a single color and make the shape until the skein is finished then take a 'trim' color and work or rows of single crochet The next color is worked in the granny stitch to the end of the skein then the trim color in sc and so on until all the colors I'm using have been finished I complete the shape with the trim color Each color makes fewer and fewer rows Using varying shades of a single color from very dark to very light and eliminating the trim rows results in an afghan color explosion These are great for kids afghans They are quick to complete and can be made in their favorite color or colors Also or inch shapes make great afghans…Read More for car seats or strollers
