Friendly Bath Whale

Crochet a whale friend to make bath time a little more fun for your child. This crochet whale from Lily Sugar n' Cream also makes a cute accent for the bathroom.

Friendly Crochet Bath Whale

Materials:

  • Yarn: Lily® Sugar ’n Cream (Solids: 70.9 g/2.5 oz/109 m/120 yds)- 2 balls: Dk Blue (MC); small amounts of Black (A) and White (B).
  • Crochet Hook: Size 3.5 mm (U.S. E or 4) crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Stuffing

Gauge: 16 sc and 20 rows = 4 ins [10 cm]

Instructions:

FRONT

With MC, ch 13.
1st row: (RS). 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook. 1 sc in each ch to end of ch. Turn.
2nd row: Ch 4. 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook. 1 sc in each of next 2 ch. 1 sc in each sc to last sc. 2 sc in last sc. Turn.
3rd row: Ch 4. 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook. 1 sc in each of next 2 ch. 1 sc in each sc to end of row. Turn.
4th row: Ch 4. 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook. 1 sc in each of next 2 ch. 1 sc in each sc to end of row. Turn.
5th row: Ch 3. 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook. 1 sc in next ch. 1 sc in each sc to last sc. 2 sc in last sc. Turn.
6th row: Ch 3. 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook. 1 sc in next ch. 1 sc in each sc to last sc. 2 sc in last sc. Turn. 30 sc.
7th to 9th rows: Ch 1. 2 sc in first sc. 1 sc in each sc to last sc. 2 sc in last sc. Turn. 36 sc.
10th to 13th rows: Ch 1. 2 sc in first sc. 1 sc in each sc to end of row. Turn. 40 sc.
14th to 18th rows: Ch 1. 1 sc in each sc to end of row. Turn.

Tail: 19th row:
(RS). Ch 1. 1 sc in each of first 9 sc. Turn. Leave rem sts unworked.
20th row: Ch 1. 1 sc in each sc to last 2 sc. Draw up a loop in each of next 2 sc. Yoh and draw through all 3 loops on hook - Sc2tog made. Turn.
21st row: Ch 1. Sc2tog over first 2 sts. 1 sc in each sc to end of row. Turn.
22nd row: Ch 3. 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook. 1 sc in next ch. 1 sc in each sc to end of row. Turn.
23rd row: Ch 1. 1 sc in each sc to last sc. 2 sc in last sc. Turn.
24th row: Ch 1. 2 sc in first sc. 1 sc in each sc to last 2 sc. Sc2tog over last 2 sc. Turn.
25th row: As 23rd row.
26th row: Ch 1. 2 sc in first sc. 1 sc in each sc to last sc. 2 sc in last sc. Turn.
27th row: Ch 3. 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook. 1 sc in next ch. 1 sc in each sc to last sc. 2 sc in last sc. Turn.
28th row: Ch 1. 1 sc in each sc to last sc. 2 sc in last sc. Turn.
29th row: Ch 1.1 sc in each sc to end of row. Turn.
30th row: Ch 1. 1 sc in each of first 4 sc. Turn.
31st row: Ch 1. Sc2tog over first 2 sc. Sc2tog over last 2 sc. Fasten off.
With WS of work facing, miss next 5 sc of 29th row. Join MC with sl st to next sc. Ch 1. 1 sc in same sp as last sl st. 1 sc in each sc to end of row. Turn.
Next row: Ch 1. 1 sc in each sc to last 2 sc. Sc2tog over last 2 sc. Turn.
Next row: Ch 1. Sc2tog over first 2 sc. 1 sc in each sc to end of row. Turn.
Next row: Ch 1. Sc2tog over first 2 sc. 1 sc in each sc to last 2 sc. Sc2tog over last 2 sc. Turn.
Next row: Ch 1. Sc2tog over first 2 sc.
1 sc in each sc to end of row. Fasten off

Top of Head
: With RS of work facing, miss next 3 sc of 18th row. Join MC with sl st to next sc. Ch 1. 1 sc in each sc to end of row. Turn. 28 sc.
Next row: Ch 1. 1 sc in each sc to last 2 sc. Turn. Leave rem sts unworked.
Next 2 rows: Ch 1. Sc2tog over first 2 sc. 1 sc in each sc to last 2 sc. Sc2tog over last 2 sc. Turn.
Next row: Ch 1. 1 sc in each sc to end of row. Turn.
Next 3 rows: Ch 1. Sc2tog over first 2 sc. 1 sc in each sc to last 2 sc. Sc2tog over last 2 sc. Turn. 16 sc. Fasten off omitting turning ch at end of last row.

BACK
Work as given for Front noting RS becomes WS.
Note: When joining Back and Front, place stuffing inside.

Joining Back and Front: Position
Back and Front matching shapes. Join MC with sl st at end of beg ch.
Working through both thicknesses, work 1 rnd of sc around shape. Join with sl st in first sc.

Fountain
: With B, ch 12. Sl st in second ch from hook. Sl st in each of next 4 ch. Ch 7. Fasten off. Shape and sew to top of Head as illustrated.
With A, embroider eye and mouth on both sides as shown in picture.
