Fancy Fun Crochet Sweater

This playful kids sweater is detailed and fun with the stripes and medallion detail along the bottom. It is an intermediate level project, so have fun with a bit of a challenge!

Medallion I (large)
**With A, ch 2.
1st rnd: 8 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Join MC with sl st to first sc. 8 sc.
2nd rnd: With MC, ch 1. 2 sc in each sc around. Join with sl st to first sc. 16 sc.
3rd rnd: Ch 1. 2 sc in same sp as sl st. *1 sc in next sc. 2 sc in next sc. Rep from * to last sc. 1 sc in last sc. Join B with sl st to first sc. 24 sc.
4th rnd: With B, ch 1. 2 sc in same sp as last sl st. *1 sc in each of next 2 sc. 2 sc in next sc. Rep from * to last 2 sc. 1 sc in each of last 2 sc. Join with sl st to first sc. 32 sc. Fasten off.
Medallion II (large)
Work as given for Medallion I, substituting B for A and A for B.
Make 5 (6-6-6-7) Medallions I and 5 (5-6- 6-6) Medallions II.
Join all these Medallions alternating Medallion I and II into bottom rnd as follows:
Joining 2 Large Medallions: Work 1st to 3rd rnds as given for Medallion I using appropriate colors.
4th rnd: With appropriate color, ch 1. 2 sc in same sp as last sl st. *1 sc in each of next 2 sc. 2 sc in next sc. Rep from * to last 2 sc. Sl st in any sc of adjoining Medallion. 1 sc in each of last 2 sc. Join with sl st to first sc. 32 sc. Fasten off.
Joining next Large Medallion: Work 1st to 3rd rnds as given for Medallion I using appropriate colors.

Joining first & last Large Medallions:
Work 1st to 3rd rnds as given for Medallion I using appropriate colors.
4th rnd: With appropriate color, ch 1. 2 sc in same sp as last sl st. (1 sc in each of next 2 sc. 2 sc in next sc) 3 times. Miss 15 sc from previous join of last adjoining Medallion. Medallion III (small)
With MC, ch 2.
1st rnd: 8 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Join A with sl st to first sc. 8 sc.

Medallion IV (small)
Work as given for Medallion III, substituting B for A.
Make 5 (6-6-6-7) Medallions III and 5 (5- 6-6-6) Medallions IV.
Join all these Medallions alternating Medallion III and IV into top rnd as follows:

Ch 1. 1 sc in same sp as last sl st. *1 sc in next sc. 1 hdc in next sc of Medallion. 1 dc in each of next 2 sc of Medallion. 1 tr in sp where 2 Medallions joined. Rep from * around. Join with sl st to first sc. 100 (110-120-120-130) sc. Place marker on last st to mark side of Body.
Note: Ch 2 does not count as hdc.
Sizes 2 and 4 only: Body: 1st rnd: Ch 2. 1 hdc in each st around. Join A with sl st to first hdc.
2nd rnd: With A, ch 1. 1 sc in each st around. Join MC with sl st to first sc.
3rd rnd: With MC, ch 2. Yoh and draw up a loop in same sp as last sl st. Yoh and draw up a loop in next sc. Yoh and draw through all loops on hook - hdc2tog made. 1 hdc in each of next 46 (51) sc. (Hdc2tog over next 2 sc) twice. Place marker before last st (side seam). 1 hdc in each of next 46 (51) sc. Hdc2tog over last 2 sts. Join with sl st to first st. 96 (106) hdc.
4th rnd: Ch 2. Hdc2tog over first 2 sts. 1 hdc in each hdc to 2 sts before marker. (Hdc2tog over next 2 sts) twice. 1 hdc in each hdc to last 2 sts. Hdc2tog over last 2 sts. Join B with sl st to first st.
5th rnd: With B, ch 1. 1 sc in each st around. Join MC with sl st to first st.
6th rnd: With MC as 4th rnd.
7th rnd: Ch 2. 1 hdc in each st around. Join with sl st to first hdc.
Note: Ch 2 does not count as hdc.
Sizes 6, 8 and 10 only: Body: 1st rnd: Ch 2. 1 hdc in each st around. Join A with sl st to first hdc.
2nd rnd: With A, ch 1. Draw up a loop in same sp as last sl st and next sc. Yoh and draw through all loops on hook - sc2tog made. 1 sc in each of next (56-56-61) hdc. (Sc2tog over next 2 sts) twice. Cont even until work from Foundation rnd measures approx 4 (5-6-71/2-9) ins [10 (12.5-15-19-23 cm]. Break A and B.
Divide for armholes: 1st row: (RS). Miss first 3 (3-3-4-4) sts. Join MC in next st. Ch 2. Hdc2tog over same sp as sl st and next st. 1 hdc in each of next 30 (35-38- 38-41) sts. Hdc2tog over next 2 sts. Turn. Leave rem sts unworked.
Work on these 32 (37-40-40-43) sts for Back.
**Next row: Ch 2. Hdc2tog over first 2 sts. 1 hdc in each hdc to last 2 sts. Hdc2tog over last 2 sts. Turn.
Rep last row 0 (1-1-0-1) time more. 30 (33-36-38-39) sts.

Rep last row until armhole measures 51/2 (6-61/2-7-71/2) ins [14 (15-16.5-18-19) cm], ending with RS facing for next row. Fasten off.
Front: With RS of work facing, miss next 4 (6-6-8-8) sts of Body section. Join MC with sl st to next st. Ch 2. Hdc2tog over same sp as last sl st and next st. 1 hdc in each of next 30 (35-38-38-41) sts.
Hdc2tog over next 2 sts. Turn. Leave rem 3 (3-3-4-4) sts unworked.
Work from ** to ** as given for Back.
Rep last row until armhole measures 6 rows less than Back, ending with RS facing for next row.
Neck shaping: Next row: Ch 2. 1 hdc in each of first 8 (9-9-9-9) sts. Hdc2tog over next 2 sts. Turn. Leave rem sts unworked.
Next row: Ch 2. Hdc2tog over first 2 sts. 1 hdc in each hdc to end of row. Turn.
Next row: Ch 2. 1 hdc in each hdc to last 2 sts. Hdc2tog over last 2 sts. Turn. 7 (8- 8-8-8) sts.

Shape Top: 1st row: Miss first 2 (2-2-3-3) sts. Join MC with sl st to next st. Ch 2. Hdc2tog over same sp as sl st and next st. 1 hdc in each of next 21 (24-28-28-33) sts. Hdc2tog over next 2 sts. Turn. Leave rem sts unworked.
2nd row: Ch 2. Hdc2tog over first 2 sts. 1 hdc in each st to last 2 sts. Hdc2tog over last 2 sts. Turn.
Rep last row 5 (6-7-7-8) times more. 11 (12-14-14-17) sts. Fasten off.
FINISHING
Pin garment pieces to measurements.
Cover with a damp cloth, leaving cloth to dry.
Neckband: Sew shoulder seams. Join MC with sl st to left shoulder seam at neck edge. Ch 1. 1 sc in same sp as last sl st. Work 10 sc down left neck edge. 1 sc in each of next 10 (11-14-16-17) hdc. Work 11 sc up right front neck edge. 1 sc in each of next 16 (17-20-22-23) hdc. 48 (50-56-60-62) sc. Join A with sl st to first sc.
2nd rnd: With A, ch 1. 1 sc in each sc around. Join MC with sl st to first sc.
3rd rnd: With MC, as 2nd rnd. Join B.
4th rnd: With B, as 2nd rnd. Join MC.
5th rnd: With MC, as 2nd rnd. Fasten off. Sew in sleeves.
