Jolly Crocheted Santa Outfit

Dress your baby as Santa Claus for Christmas this year with our jolly crocheted Santa outfit. These free crochet patterns include a hat and jacket to make your child look just like Saint Nick himself!  This is an adorable project for little girls and boys alike...and it would be perfect for the family Christmas photo that you do every year.  Great for beginners and advanced crocheters alike, this cute crochet set is a fun way to spend a snowy weekend inside.  Want to make it more feminine friendly?  Add a cute little bow on the hat or use soft pink yarn rather than red.

Jolly Crocheted Santa Outfit

Materials:

  • 2 (2, 2, 2, 3) balls Premier Yarns Dream yarn in Red (A)
  • 1 ball Premier Yarns Dream yarn in White (B)
  • 1 ball Premier Yarns Dream yarn in Black (C)
  • US G-6 (4.25mm) or size to obtain gauge
  • Yarn needle
  • Stitch marker
  • 1¼" metal belt buckle
  • 4 (4, 5, 5, 6) – ½" buttons
  • Sewing needle and thread
  • 1½" piece of cardboard

 

Gauge:  14 sts and 10 rows = 4" in pat. Use any size hook to obtain specified gauge.

 

Sizes and Measurements:
12 months (18 months, 2 years, 4-6 years, 6-8 years)

Sweater

  • Chest: 21 (23, 25, 29, 31)"
  • Length: 16 (17, 18, 18½, 19½)"
  • Sleeve Length: 8 (8½, 9½, 11½, 12½)"

Hat

  • 16 (18)" head circumference

 

Special Stitches:

 

  • Puff Stitch: * Yo and insert hook in st, yo and draw up a loop (3 loops on hook); rep from * 3 more times, wrap yarn around hook and draw through all loops on hook.
  • Dc2tog: [Yo, insert hook in next st and draw up a lp, yo and pull through 2 lps on hook] twice, yo and pull through rem 3 lps on hook – 1 st dec.
  • To change colors: Work last st until 2 lps rem, drop working color, finish st with new color.

 

Instructions:
Unless otherwise specified, ch3 at beg of dc rows counts as a dc.

Sweater

  1. Back: Beg at bottom edge with A, ch 38 (42, 46, 52, 56).
     
  2. Row 1 (RS): Sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across; turn – 37 (41, 45, 51, 55) sc.
     
  3. Row 2: Ch 3, sk next st, dc in next st and in each st across; turn – 37 (41, 45, 51, 55) dc.
     
  4. Row 3: Ch 1, sc in each st across; turn.
     
  5. Rows 48 (410, 410, 412, 414): Rep Rows 2 and 3, ending with Row 2, changing to C in last st.
     
  6. Rows 917 (1119, 1119, 1321, 1523): Ch 1, sc in each st across; turn. Change to A.
     
  7. Rows 1835 (2037, 2039, 2241, 2443): Rep Rows 2 and 3.

Shape Left Shoulder

  1. Row 36 (38, 40, 42, 44) (WS): Ch 3, sk first st, dc in each of next 9 (11, 14, 16, 18) sts; turn – 10 (12, 15, 17, 19) sts.
     
  2. Row 37 (39, 41, 43, 45): Ch 1, sc in each st across; fasten off.

Shape Right Shoulder

  1. Row 36 (38, 40, 42, 44): With WS facing, count in 9 (11, 14, 16, 18) sts from side edge, join yarn with a sl st, ch 3, dc in each st to end, leaving center of row open for back neck; turn – 9 (11, 14, 16, 18) sts.
     
  2. Row 37 (39, 41, 43, 45): Ch 1, sc in each st across; fasten off.

Bottom Trim

  1. Row 1: With RS facing and B, join yarn with a sl st in bottom right corner, ch 1, sc in same st and in each st across; turn –37 (41, 45, 51, 55) sts.
     
  2. Row 2: Ch 3, sk first st, dc in next st, * Puff st in next st, dc in next st; rep from * across, dc in last st; turn.
     
  3. Row 3: Ch 1, sc in each st across; turn.
     
  4. Row 4: Ch 1, sc in first st, * tr in next st, sc in next st; rep from * across, sc in last st; fasten off.

Right Front

  1. Beg at bottom edge with A, ch 14 (16, 20, 22, 26).
     
  2. Row 1 (RS): Sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across; turn – 13 (15, 19, 21, 25) sts.
     
  3. Row 2: Ch 3, sk first st, dc in next st and in each st across; turn – 13 (15, 19, 21, 25) sts.
     
  4. Row 3: Ch 1, sc in each st across; turn.
     
  5. Rows 48 (410, 410, 412, 414): Rep Rows 2 and 3, ending with Row 2 and changing to C in last st.
     
  6. Rows 917 (1119, 1119, 1321, 1523): Ch 1, sc in each st across; turn, changing to A in last st.
     
  7. Rows 1833 (2035, 2037, 2239, 2441): Rep Rows 2 and 3.
     
  8. Shape Right Neck and Shoulder—Row 34 (36, 38, 40, 42) (WS): Ch 3, sk next st, dc in each of next 9 (11, 14, 16, 18) sts; turn – 11 (13, 16, 18, 20) sts.
     
  9. Row 35 (37, 39, 41, 43): Ch 1, sc in first st and in each st across; turn.
     
  10. Row 36 (38, 40, 42, 44): Ch 3, sk first st, dc in each st to last 2 sts, dc2tog; turn – 9 (11, 14, 16, 18) sts.
     
  11. Row 37 (39, 41, 43, 45): Rep Row 35; fasten off.

Left Front

  1. Work same as Right Front through Row 33 (35, 37, 39, 41); fasten off at end of last row.

Shape Left Neck and Shoulder

  1. Row 34 (36, 38, 40, 42): With WS facing, count 10 (12, 15, 17, 19) sts from side edge, join yarn with a sl st, ch 3, sk next st, dc in each st to end – 10 (12, 15, 17, 19) sts.
     
  2. Row 35 (37, 39, 41, 43): Ch 1, sc in each st across; turn.
     
  3. Row 36 (38, 40, 42, 44): Ch 3, sk first st, dc2tog, dc in each st across; turn – 9 (11, 14, 16, 18) sts.
     
  4. Row 37 (39, 41, 43, 45): Rep Row 35; fasten off.

Bottom Trim for Right and Left Front

  1. Row 1: With RS facing and B, join yarn with a sl st in bottom right corner, ch 1, sc in same st and in each st across; turn – 13 (15, 19, 21, 25) sts.
     
  2. Row 2: Ch 3, dc in first st, * Puff st in next st, dc in next st; rep from * across, dc in last st; turn.
     
  3. Row 3: Ch 1, sc in first st, sc in each st across; turn.
     
  4. Row 4: Ch 1, sc in first st, * tr in next st, sc in next st; rep from * across, sc in last st.; fasten off.
     
  5. Sew shoulder seams.

Neck Trim

  1. Row 1: With RS facing and B, join yarn with a sl st in top right corner of neck, ch 1, sc in same sp, sc evenly around to back shoulder; sc in every other st across back neck, sc evenly across to top left corner; turn.
     
  2. Row 2: Ch 3, sk first st, dc in next st, * Puff Stitch, dc in next st; rep from * around, dc in last st; turn.
     
  3. Row 3: Ch 1, sc in each st around; fasten off.

Left Front Trim

  1. Row 1: With RS facing, join yarn with a sl st to top left side, ch 1, sc in same st and evenly across left side; turn.
     
  2. Row 2: Ch 3, sk first st, dc in each st across; fasten off.

Right Front Trim

  1. Row 1: With RS facing, join yarn with a sl st to bottom right side, ch 1, sc in same st, sc evenly across right side; turn.
     
  2. Row 2: Ch 3, sk next st, dc in next st, *Puff Stitch in next st, dc in next st; rep from * across, dc in last st; turn.
     
  3. Row 3: Ch 1, sc in each st across; fasten off.
     
  4. Use the space between dc and Puff Stitch for buttonholes.

Sleeve (Make 2)

  1. Beg at wrist with A, ch 26 (26, 26, 28, 28).
     
  2. Row 1 (RS): Sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across; turn – 25 (25, 25, 27, 27) sts.
     
  3. Row 2: Ch 3, sk first st, dc in each st across; turn.
     
  4. Row 3: Ch 1, sc in each st across; turn.
     
  5. Row 4 (inc row): Ch 3, sk first st, 2 dc in next, dc across to last 2 sts, 2 dc in next st, dc in last st st; turn – 27 (27, 27, 29, 29) sts.
     
  6. Row 5: Ch 1, sc in first st and in each st across; turn.
     
  7. Row 6: Ch 3, sk first st, dc in next st and in each st across; turn.
     
  8. Row 7: Ch 1, sc in first st and in each st across; turn.
     
  9. Rows 816 (818, 820, 826, 828): Rep Rows 47 two more times and rep Row 4 once more (rep Rows 47 two more times and rep Rows 46 once more; rep Rows 47 three more times and rep Row 4 once more; rep Rows 4 7 four more times and rep Rows 46 once more; rep Rows 47 five more times and rep Row 4 once more); fasten off at end of last row – 33 (33, 35, 39, 41) sts.

Cuff Trim

  1. Row 1: With RS facing and B, join yarn with a sl st in the bottom right corner, ch 1, sc in same st and in each st across; turn – 25 (25, 25, 27, 27) sts.
     
  2. Row 2: Ch 3, sk first st, dc in next st, * Puff st in next st, dc in next st; rep from * across, dc in last st; turn.
     
  3. Row 3: Ch 1, sc in in each st across; turn.
     
  4. Row 4: Ch 1, sc in first st, * tr in next st, sc in next st; rep from * across, sc in last st; fasten off.

Belt

  1. Right Side: With C, ch 8.
     
  2. Row 1: Sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across; turn – 7 sts.
     
  3. Rows 28: Ch 1, sc in each sc across; turn; fasten off at end of last row.
     
  4. Fold belt in half, loop through buckle and pull buckle rod through the center fold. Align the belt buckle next to right side trim. Sew in place.

Belt

  1. Left Side: With C, ch 8.
     
  2. Row 1 (RS): Sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across; turn – 7 sts.
     
  3. Rows 220: Ch 1, sc in each st across; turn. With RS facing, sl st evenly around outside edge of belt; join with a sl st in first sl st; fasten off. Sew in place, 1" from left side trim.

Belt Loop

  1. With C, ch 10.
     
  2. Row 1: Sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across; turn – 9 sts.
     
  3. Rows 2 and 3: C 1, sc in first st and in each st across; turn; fasten off at end of last row. Sew the belt loop on the right side 1" from buckle.

Finishing

  1. Set in sleeves, sew side and sleeve seams.
     
  2. Sew buttons opposite buttonholes. Weave in ends.

 

Hat

  1. Beg at point with A, ch 2.
     
  2. Rnd 1: 6 sc in second ch from hook. Do not join rnds; mark last st of rnd and move marker up with each completed rnd.
     
  3. Rnd 2: Sc in each st around – 6 sts.
     
  4. Rnd 3: * Sc in each of next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st; rep from * once more – 8 sts.
     
  5. Rnds 4 and 5: Sc in each st around.
     
  6. Rnd 6: * Sc in next st, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around – 12 sts.
     
  7. Rnds 7 and 8: Sc in each st around.
     
  8. Rnd 9: * Sc in each of next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around – 16 sts.
     
  9. Rnds 10 and 11: Sc in each st around.
     
  10. Rnd 12: * Sc in each of next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around – 20 sts.
     
  11. Rnds 13 and 14: Sc in each st around.
     
  12. Rnd 15: * Sc in each of next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around – 25 sts.
     
  13. Rnds 16 and 17: Sc in each st around.
     
  14. Rnd 18: * Sc in each of next 4 sts, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around – 30 sts.
     
  15. Rnds 1922: Sc in each st around.
     
  16. Rnd 23: * Sc in each of next 4 sts, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around – 36 sts.
     
  17. Rnds 24 and 25: Sc in each st around.
     
  18. Rnd 26: * Sc around, inc 6 sts evenly – 42 sts.
     
  19. Rnds 27 and 28: Sc in each st around.
     
  20. Rnds 2938 (2942): Rep Rnds 2428, inc 2 sts evenly on last rnd and ending with Rnd 27 of last rep on larger size only – 56 (62) sts.
     
  21. Rnd 39 (43): Sl st in next sc, ch 3, dc in next st and in each st around, join with a sl st in third ch of beg ch3 – 56 (62) sts.
     
  22. Rnd 40 (44): Ch 1, sc in each st around, join with a sl st in first sc.
     
  23. Rnds 4144 (4550): Rep Rnds 39 and 40. Change to B.
     
  24. Rnd 45 (51): Rep Rnd 39.
     
  25. Rnds 4647 (5253): Ch 3, * Puff Stitch in next st, dc in next st; rep from * around; join with a sl st in third ch of beg ch3; fasten off at end of last rnd.
     
  26. Weave in ends.

Pom Pom

  1. With B, wind yarn around cardboard until desired thickness. Tie tightly in center and cut loops on both ends. Trim into ball and fluff. Attach to top of hat.
