Sweet Baby Poncho

Using Bernat Baby Cakes lacy pattern you can make this adorable baby crochet poncho. It fits a baby from size 12 to 24 months. It's the perfect outfit for the summer and can also be worn year round for easy comfort and warmth.  You can make this pattern in any color you'd like and it's a fun and simple project for crochet fans of all skill levels.  If you've been on the hunt for an easy and fun crochet pattern that won't take up a ton of time, you've come to the right place.

Sweet Baby Poncho

Materials:

  • 3 balls Bernat® Baby Cakes (100 g/3.5 oz; 185 m/203 yds) yarn in Punkin'
  • 5 mm (U.S. H or 8) crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge

 

Gauge:  13½ dc and 7 rows = 4 ins [10 cm].

 

Instructions:
One size to fit baby 12/24 mos. Approx 27 ins [68.5 cm] square.
Poncho is worked in one piece.
Ch 3 at beg of row counts as dc.

  1. Ch 93.
     
  2. 1st row: (RS). 1 dc in 4th ch from hook. 1 dc in each ch to end of chain. 91 dc. Turn.
     
  3. 2nd row: Ch 3. *1 dc in next dc. Ch 1. Miss next dc. Rep from * to last 2 dc. 1 dc in each of last 2 dc. Turn.
     
  4. 3rd row: Ch 3. *1 dc in next dc. 1 dc in next ch-1 sp. Rep from * to last 2 dc. 1 dc in each of last 2 dc. Turn.
     
  5. Rep last 2 rows until work from beg measures 11½ ins [29 cm], ending with 2nd row. Place marker at each end of last row.

Left Front

  1. Next row: (RS). Ch 3. (1 dc in next dc. 1 dc in next ch-1 sp) 17 times. 1 dc in next dc. Turn. Leave rem sts unworked.
     
  2. Next row: Ch 3. 1 dc in each of next 2 dc. *Ch 1. Miss next dc. 1 dc in next dc. Rep from * to last dc. 1 dc in last dc. Turn.
     
  3. Rep last 2 rows until work from marked row measures 2 ins [5 cm], ending with a RS row. Fasten off.
     
  4. Right Front: (RS). Miss next 19 sts. Join yarn with sl st to next st.
     
  5. Next row: Ch 3. *1 dc in next ch-1 sp. 1 dc in next dc. Rep from * to last dc. 1 dc in last dc. Turn.
     
  6. Next row: Ch 3. *1 dc in next dc. Ch 1. Miss next dc. Rep from * to last dc. 1 dc in last dc. Turn.
     
  7. Rep last 2 rows until work from marked row measures 2 ins [5 cm], ending with a RS row.
     
  8. Back: Joining row: (WS). Ch 3. *1 dc in next dc. Ch 1. Miss next dc. Rep from * to last dc. 1 dc in last dc. Ch 19. Working across Left Front sts: 1 dc in next dc. **Ch 1. Miss next dc.
     
  9. 1 dc in next dc. Rep from ** to last dc. 1 dc in last dc. Turn.
     
  10. Place marker at each end of last row.
     
  11. Next row: Ch 3. *1 dc in next dc. 1 dc in next ch-1 sp. Rep from * to ch-19 sp. 1 dc in each of next 19 ch. **1 dc in next dc. 1 dc in next ch-1 sp. Rep from ** to last 2 dc. 1 dc in each of last 2 dc. Turn. 91 dc.
     
  12. Cont in pat until work from last marked row measures 13½ ins [34.5 cm], ending with a RS row. Fasten off.

I am having trouble understanding the shoulders. I did the left front and got 20 DC. Then for the right I started on the outside egde went in 20 DC but the neck looks to large. What is the witdh of the poncho ? I hope you can help me with this.

to do "1 dc in next ch-1 sp" instead of slipping your crochet hook into the stitch you created in the previous row, like you would usually do, slip it into the space created by the chain 1 that you made in the previous row. In the first row you have 91 dc's, the next row you will have 46 dc's and 45 ch 1 spaces, then the next row will be back to 91 dc's, next 46 dc's and 45 ch 1 spaces, etc. Hope this helps.
