Shells and Stripes Baby Afghan

The Shells and Stripes Baby Afghan from Roseanna Beck is simple and sweet. These shell afghan instructions will show you how to make striped shell stitch afghans for baby in any colors that match the nursery or gender of the baby. A beautifully done picot edging in white finishes off this blanket.

 Stripes and Shells Baby Afghan

Size:
41” x 48”

Materials:

  • 50 yds. White Red Heart 4-ply yarn
  • 320 yds. each of Baby Pink, Pale Blue, Maize, Pale Green Red Heart 4-ply yarn
  • H crochet hook or size needed for gauge

Gauge:

  • 4 row pattern = 3”
  • Sh St, V St, Sh St, V St = 4”


Stitch Guide:

  • Chain (ch), Single Crochet (sc), Double Crochet (dc), Slip Stitch (sl st)
  • Shell Stitch (Sh St) – 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc
  • V St – 1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc

Instructions:

Row 1 – With pink ch 154 st, Sh St in 7th ch from hook, *skip 3 ch, V St in next ch, skip 3 ch, Sh St in next ch, rep from * across alternating Sh St and V St ending with a Sh St, skip 2 ch, work 1 dc in last ch, ch 3 and turn. (19 Sh St and 18 V St)
Row 2 – V St in first ch 2 sp of Sh St, Sh St in ch 2 sp of V St, rep across alternating V St and Sh St, ending work 1 dc in last dc, ch 3 and turn.
Row 3 – Sh St in first ch 2 sp of V St, V St in next ch 2 sp of Sh St, rep across alternating Sh St and V St, ending work 1 dc in last dc, ch 3 and turn.
Row 4 – Repeat Row 2, fasten off and turn.
Row 5 – Join blue with a sl st in dc, ch 2, Sh St in first V St, V St in next Sh St, rep across alternating Sh St and V St, ending work 1 dc in last dc, ch 3 and turn.
Repeat Rows 2 and 3 having 4 rows in each color as follows:
4 rows pink, 4 rows blue, 4 rows yellow, 4 rows green
Repeat this color sequence 4 times for a total of 64 rows"

Starting at top right edge with white (sc, ch 3, dc) in first dc, sc in next dc, *(sc, ch 3, dc) in ch 2 sp of V St, skip 1 dc, sc in next dc, skip 1 dc, (sc, ch 3, sc) in ch 2 sp of Sh St, skip 1 dc, sc in next dc, skip 1 dc, rep from * across ending (sc, ch 3, dc) in last st, work along side edge (sc, ch 3, sc) in each dc across ending (sc, ch 3, dc) in first ch of bottom edge, work along  bottom edge sc in next ch, *(sc, ch 3, dc) in ch below Sh St, skip 1 ch, sc in next ch, skip 1 ch, (sc, ch 3, dc) in ch below V St, skip 1 ch, sc in next ch, skip 1 ch, rep from * across ending (sc, ch 3, dc) in last ch, work along side edge (sc, ch 3, sc) in each dc across, join to beg sc and fasten off.
