We are reaching the end of January, and I'm getting tired of wrapping the old scarf around my face to keep my nose, cheeks, and chin from falling off (as I write this, its -25C-13F). So, what better way to keep my face warm than a cowl?  This Flexi Cowl is perfect for cold weather, and the lovely colors make it the perfect winter accessory for men and women alike.  Make one for yourself and one for all your friends and family.  They make wonderful gifts and are easy enough for crochet fans of all skill levels to make.

Materials:

  • 1-2 skeins light weight yarn (328 yards)
  • 3.75mm hook crochet hook
  • Diagram

Instructions:

  1. Make a chain of a multiple of 4 + 2 (mine was of 82).

  2. Row 1: ch 2 (counts as a sc), sc 1, * ch 2, skip 2, sc 2 * to the end.

  3. Row 2: ch 3 (counts as a dc), dc 1, * ch 2, skip 2, dc 2 * to the end.

  4. Repeat rows 1 and 2 until desired length, ending with a row 1.

  5. The cowl is a flexible cowl, since you can button it tight to look more like a scarf, or wear it looser around the neck.

  6. To finish it, add the button on the edge. They should fit through the little holes.

Do I turn after each row or start another row? Can you tell me the name of the yarn I love the colors. crochet lover

To answer MrsJonesy's question about 80 or 82... Chain any multiple of 4. Then chain 2 extra to start the next row. It's the same as if you're chaining up from any previous row. The chain 2 doesn't count as a stitch, so in this example, you'll wind up with 80 stitches across, not 82.

I'm confused by the instructions. Did you chain 82 then add a chain 2 to start your first row or chain 80 and then chain 2 starting the first row? I keep ending my first row incorrectly with two chains left, which doesn't match the diagram. Any help is greatly appreciated. I'm trying to make this for a Christmas gift. Thanks!

I love the pattern. It reminds me of filet crochet, which I love to do. I'm going to make this one. Thanks for sharing

I like the visual of the stitches. It is helpful to a visual person like me and it isn't always possible to visualize the arrangement of the stitches.
