This Subway Scarf from Caron International Yarns is super cool because it it can be made for a his or her scarf. A free crochet scarf pattern like this one is easy to work up using the half double crochet stitch in a gray and plum color.
spike-hdc: Spike half double crochet – Yarn over, insert hook in indicated stitch 2 rows below, yarn over and draw up a loop to level of work, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook. Notes: Take care to draw the loop up to the current row height so that the stitch doesn't pull downwards. Do not work into the corresponding stitch in the current working row. The row into which a stitch is usually worked is "1 row below" the current row (being worked). A stitch "2 rows below" is in the row immediately beneath the row into which a stitch would usually be worked.
To change color, work last stitch of old color to last yarn over; yarn over with new color and draw through all loops on hook to complete stitch. Proceed with new color. Carry color not in use up side of piece until next needed.
With A, ch 225.
Row 1 (RS): Hdc in 3rd ch from hook and in each remaining ch across, turn—223 hdc.
Row 2: Ch 2 (does not count as a st), hdc in each st across; change to B in last st, turn.
Row 3: With B, *spike-hdc in next st 2 rows below, hdc in next st; repeat from * across to last st, spike-hdc in last st 2 rows below, turn.

Using crochet hook, *insert hook from WS to RS into short end of scarf and into fold of fringe, pull fold through edge of scarf, forming a loop, insert fringe ends into loop and pull tight against edge; repeat from * working fringe evenly spaced across end of scarf. Repeat across other end of scarf.
