Smurf Hat

You'll be singing a happy song after you make and wear this awesome Smurf Hat!  Crochet hat patterns are great for beginners, so there's no excuses!  Make a Smurf Hat for you and all of your friends!

Smurf Hat

Materials:

  • 1 Ball of Red Heart Blue Yarn
  • 1 Ball of Red Heart White Yarn
  • Small amount of Black Yarn
  • 2 - ½” black buttons
  • Fiberfill

     

Instructions:
Chain 1 counts as a single crochet and Chain 3 counts as a double crochet throughout pattern.
Smurfy Hat: (Adult, Teen, Child)

 

  1. With K Hook and Blue Yarn Ch (66) (60) (54) and sl st to form a ring. (Try not to twist chain when forming the ring)
     
  2. Row 1: Ch 1, sc around, sl st to ch 1 (66) (60) (54)
     
  3. Row 2-18: Repeat Row 1 (66) (60) (54)
     
  4. Change to White Yarn
     
  5. Row 19: (In front loops only) Ch 1, sc in next 4 sts, 2sc in next st, *sc in next 5 sts, 2 sc in next st* repeat from * around, sl st to ch 1 (77) (70) (63)
     
  6. Row 20: (In both loops) Ch 3, dc around, sl st in top of ch 3 (77) (70) (63)
     
  7. Row 21-22: Repeat Row 20 (77) (70) (63)
     
  8. Row 23: Ch 3, dc in next 4 sts, dctog, *dc in next 5 sts, dctog * repeat from * around, sl st in top of ch 3 (66) (60) (54)
     
  9. Row 24: Ch 3, dc in next 3 sts, dctog, * dc in next 4 sts, dctog * repeat from * around, sl st in top of ch 3 (55) (50) (45)
     
  10. Row 25: Ch 3, dc in next 2 sts, dctog, * dc in next 3 sts, dctog * repeat from * around, sl st in top of ch 3 (44) (40) (36)
     
  11. Row 26: Ch 3, dc in next st, dctog, * dc in next 2 sts, dctog * repeat from * around, sl st in top of ch 3 (33) (30) (27)
     
  12. Row 27: Ch 3, dc around, sl st to the top of ch 3 (33) (30) (27)
     
  13. Row 28: Ch 3 dc in back half of hat and sc in front half of hat. (All the sc will be in front loops only to begin to shape floppy hat) (dc will be in both loops) (33) (30) (27)
     
  14. Row 29-32: Repeat Row 28 (33) (30) (27)
     
  15. Row 33: (In both loops) Ch 3, dc around, sl st in top of ch 3 (33) (30) (27)
     
  16. Row 34-36: Repeat Row 33 (33) (30) (27)
     
  17. Row 37: Ch 3, dctog, *dc in next st, dctog* repeat from * around, sl st in top of ch 3 (22) (20) (18)
     
  18. Row 38: Ch 3, skip one, dctog around, sl st in top of ch 3 (11) (10) (9)
     
  19. Row 39: Ch 1, sctog around, sl st in ch 1 (6) (5) (4)
     
  20. Fasten off and sew shut. Weave in end.
     
  21. Anchor the top part of hat to the middle of the hat with needle and yarn. Weave in ends.
     
  22. Finishing Edge: Finish edge of blue by holding hat upside down and single crochet around bottom.
     
  23. Fasten off and weave in ends. This hat can also be worn as a headband, but stopping at row 18. Do finishing edge on both the top and bottom of headband.
     
  24. Eyes (Make 2): With I Hook and White Yarn Ch 3, sl st to form ring
     
  25. Row 1: Ch 1, sc 5 in ring, sl st to ch 1 (6)
     
  26. Row 2: Ch 1, sc in same st, 2 sc in next 5 sts, sl st to ch 1 (12)
     
  27. Row 3: Ch 2, hdc in same st, hdc in next st, 2 sc in next st, sc in next st, 2 sc in next st, hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st, hd in next st, 2 sc in next st, sc in next st, 2 sc in next st, hdc in next st, sl st to top of ch 2 (18)
     
  28. Fasten off, leave a long tail for sewing to hat.
     
  29. Attach ½ “ black buttons a little off center as pictured…
     
  30. Eyebrows (Make 2): With I Hook and Black Yarn Ch 6, fasten off
     
  31. Leave long tail for sewing to hat
     
  32. Ears (Make 2): With I Hook and Blue Yarn Ch 3, sl st to form ring
     
  33. Row 1: Ch 3, dc 8 in ring, sl st to top of ch 3 (9)
     
  34. Row 2: Ch 3, dc in same st, 2 dc in each st around, sl st to top of ch 3 (18)
     
  35. Row 3: Ch 1, 2 sc in next st *1 sc in next st, 2 sc in next st * repeat from * around, sl st in ch 1 (27)
     
  36. Row 4: Ch 1, sctog, sctog, sctog, sc in next 7 sts, sctog, sctog, sctog, sc in next 7, sl st to ch 1 (21)
     
  37. Nose: With G Hook and Blue Yarn Ch 3, sl st to form ring
     
  38. Row 1: Ch 1, sc 5 in ring, sl st to ch 1 (6)
     
  39. Row 2: Ch 1, sc in same st, 2 sc in next 5 sts, sl st to ch 1 (12)
     
  40. Row 3: Ch 1, 2 sc in next st, *sc in next st, 2 sc in next st * repeat from * around, sl st to ch 1 (18)
     
  41. Row 4: Ch 1, sc around, sl st to ch 1 (18)
     
  42. Row 5-6: Repeat Row 4 (18)
     
  43. Row 7: Ch 1, sc in next 3 sts, sctog, *sc in next 4 sts, sctog * repeat from * around, sl st to ch 1 (15)
     
  44. Row 8: Ch 1, sc around, sl st to ch 1 (15)
     
  45. Row 9: Ch 1, sc in next 2 sts, sctog *sc in next 3 sts, sctog* repeat from * around, sl st to ch 1 (12)
     
  46. Row 10: Ch 1, sc around, sl st to ch 1 (12)
     
  47. Row 11: Repeat Row 10 (12)
     
  48. Fasten off and leave a long tail.(Don‘t close shut.) Stuff nose firmly and sew right below eyes so that they are just touching, but not overlapping the eyes.

Question! First, Bless your big blue Smurf heart for sharing this pattern. My Grandson is going to love his, he was a Smurf for Halloween last year,2013. What size yarn did you use, size 4 knitting worsted? Also did you use a smaller hook for the Child's size, and what shade of blue did you use? I want to be sure to have everything right when I get started. Thank you for the pattern and the help. Sheila

I'm confused with row 28. Is it dc in first stitch and then next stitch is sc in front loop all the way around, or dc in back loops only??
