Holiday DIY Elf Hat

Crochet hat patterns are great for the Christmas season. The weather is getting colder and people have thoughts of the North Pole and sugar plums, which makes this Holiday DIY Elf Hat a great accessory for the little ones. You can crochet this cheerful hat either with or without little elf ears. Whatever you choose, the magic of Christmas will come to life with this free crochet hat pattern. Crochet HookG/6 or 4 mm hook, H/8 or 5 mm hook

Materials:

  • 5mm (H) hook & 4mm (6) hook.  If you don’t have a 4mm hook use a 4.25mm (G) hook.
  • Double knit (8ply) – Green, Red and Pink yarn (you only need the pink if you are making the ears)
  • Stitch marker
  • Wool needle
  • 3 x 6mm bells

Abbreviations:

  • At the end of each round just carry on.
  • Mark the start of each round and then move marker as a round is completed. You Don’t need to ss to join you just carry on to make the next round
  • HK - hook
  • CH - chain
  • SS – Slip Stitch
  • HDC – half double crochet
  • HDC INC – Half double crochet Increase.  Increase by placing 2 hdc in 1 stitch.
  • HDC DEC – Half double crochet decrease.  Yarn over hook, through 1st stitch, yarn over hook through, hook through next stitch, yarn over hook pull through.  Yarn over hook and pull through all the loops.

Gauge:

  • 2” = 8 stitches x 6 rows
  • If your hat is coming out too big go down one hook size and vice versa if it’s too small.
  • One size fits most heads.

Instructions:

Basic hat

  1. Using 5mm (H) hook and Green yarn.
     
  2. Ch 2 (or use magic circle)
     
  3. Round 1)  5 hdc in the 2nd ch from the hook (5) (carry on to the first hdc to start the next round)
     
  4. Round 2)  5 hdc inc (10)
     
  5. Round 3)  *1 hdc, hdc inc* x 5 (15)
     
  6. Round 4)  *2 hdc, hdc inc* x 5 (20)
     
  7. Round 5)  *3 hdc, hdc inc* x 5 (25)
     
  8. Round 6)  25 hdc around (25)
     
  9. Round 7)  *4 hdc, hdc inc* x 5 (30)
     
  10. Round 8)  30 hdc around (30)
     
  11. Round 9)  *5 hdc, hdc inc * x 5 (35)
     
  12. Round 10)  35 hdc around (35)
     
  13. Round 11)  *6 hdc, hdc inc* x 5 (40)
     
  14. Round 12) 40 hdc around (40)
     
  15. Round 13) *7 hdc, 1 hdc inc* x 5 (45)
     
  16. Round 14) 45 hdc around (45)
     
  17. Round 15) *8 hdc, 1 hdc inc* x 5 (50)
     
  18. Round 16) 50 hdc around (50)
     
  19. Round 17) *9 hdc, 1 hdc inc* x 5 (55)
     
  20. Round 18) 55 hdc around (55)
     
  21. Round 19) *10 hdc, 1 hdc inc* x 5 (60)
     
  22. Round 20) 60 hdc around (60)
     
  23. Round 21) *11 hdc, 1 hdc inc* x 5 (65)
     
  24. Round 22 – 31) 65 hdc around
     
  25. Round 32)  swap to red yarn & 65 around (65)
     
  26. Round 33 – 34) 65 hdc around (65)
     
  27. Round 35) 65 hdc around, 2 ss (into next stitches), finish

 

Bells

  1. Attach the 3 bells to the top of the hat

 

Ears

  1. You can decide whether or not you want the elf ears.
     
  2. Pink yarn & 4mm (6) hook
     
  3. Ch 2
     
  4. Round 1) 6 hdc in 2nd ch from hk (carry on using 1hdc as the start of the next round) (6)
     
  5. Round 2) 6 hdc inc (12)
     
  6. Row 3) 3 hdc, 1 ss, ch 2, turn (4)
     
  7. Row 4) 1 hdc dec, 1 hdc, 1 hdc dec, ch 2, turn (3)
     
  8. Row 5) 1 hdc dec, 1 hdc, ch 2, turn (2)
     
  9. Row 6) 1 hdc dec, finish (leave enough yarn to attach the ear to the hat). (1)
     
  10. Attach the ears to the hat
