Simple Crochet Tote

Keep up with fashion by crocheting the stylish and spacious tote from Lily Sugar n' Cream! Wide shoulder straps keep the bag comfortable while you use the tote for any adventures that come your way, be they groceries, errands, or trips to the library.  This crochet pattern will make what will soon be your favorite bag.
 

Simple Crochet Tote

Materials:

  • Lily® Sugar ’n Cream® (70.9 g/2.5 oz; 109 m/120 yds)
  • Main Color (MC) (01118 Stonewash) 4 balls
  • Contrast A (01130 Warm Brown) 2 balls
  • Sizes 4 mm (U.S. G or 6) and 6.5 mm (U.S. K or 10½) crochet hooks or size needed to obtain gauge.
  • 15 sc and 16 rows = 4" [10 cm] with smaller hook guage.

Instructions:

Bag

  1. With smaller hook and MC, ch 33.
     
  2. 1st rnd: 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook. 1 sc in each ch to last chain. 3 sc in last ch. Working across opposite side of foundation ch, 1 sc in each ch to last ch. 2 sc in last ch. Join with sl st to first sc. 66 sc.
     
  3. 2nd rnd: Ch 1. 2 sc in first sc. 1 sc in each of next 30 sc. 2 sc in each of next 3 sc. 1 sc in each of next 30 sc. 2 sc in each of last 2 sc. Join with sl st to first sc. 72 sc.
     
  4. 3rd rnd: Ch 1. 2 sc in next sc. 1 sc in each of next 31 sc. (2 sc in next sc. 1 sc in next sc) 3 times. 1 sc in each of next 30 sc. (1 sc in next sc. 2 sc in next sc) twice. Join with sl st to first sc. 78 sc.
     
  5. 4th rnd: Ch 1. 2 sc in first sc. 1 sc in each of next 32 sc. (2 sc in next sc. 1 sc in each of next 2 sc) 3 times. 1 sc in each of next 30 sc. (2 sc in next sc. 1 sc in each of 2 next sc) twice. Join with sl st to first sc. 84 sc.
     
  6. 5th rnd: Ch 1. 2 sc in next sc. 1 sc in each of next 33 sc. (1 sc in each of next 3 sc. 2 sc in next sc) 3 times. 1 sc in each of next 30 sc. (2 sc in next sc. 1 sc in each of 3 next sc) twice. Join with sl st to first sc. 90 sc.
     
  7. 6th to 10th rnds: Ch 1. 1 sc in each sc around. Join with sl st to first sc.
     
  8. 11th rnd: Ch 1. *1 sc in each of next 8 sc. 2 sc in next sc. Rep from * around. Join with sl st to first sc. 100 sc.
     
  9. 12th to 16th rnds: As 6th rnd.
     
  10. 17th rnd: Ch 1. *1 sc in each of next 4 sc. 2 sc in next sc. 1 sc in each of next 4 sc. Rep from * around. Join with sl st to first sc.100 sc.
     
  11. 18th to 22nd rnds: As 6th rnd.
     
  12. 23rd rnd: Ch 1. *1 sc in each of next 9 sc. 2 sc in next sc. Rep from * around. Join with sl st to first sc. 110 sc.
     
  13. 24th to 28th rnds: As 6th rnd.
     
  14. 29th rnd: *1 sc in each of next 5 sc. 2 sc in next sc. 1 sc in each of next 5 sc. Rep from * around. Join with sl st to first sc.120 sc.
     
  15. 30th to 34th rnds: As 6th rnd.
     
  16. 35th rnd: Ch 1. *1 sc in each of next 11 sc. 2 sc in next sc. Rep from * around. Join with sl st to first sc. 130 sc.
     
  17. 36th to 40th rnds: As 6th rnd.
     
  18. 41st rnd: *1 sc in each of next 6 sc. 2 sc in next sc. 1 sc in each of next 6 sc. Rep from * around. Join with sl st to first sc. 140 sc.
     
  19. 42nd to 46th rnds: As 6th rnd.
     
  20. 47th rnd: Ch 1. *1 sc in each of next 13 sc. 2 sc in next sc. Rep from * around. Join with sl st to first sc. 150 sc.
     
  21. 48th to 52nd rnds: As 6th rnd.
     
  22. 53rd rnd: *1 sc in each of next 7 sc. 2 sc in next sc. 1 sc in each of next 7 sc. Rep from * around. Join with sl st to first sc. 160 sc.
     
  23. 54th to 58th rnds: As 6th rnd.
     
  24. Fasten off.

Straps (make 2).

  1. Note: Strap is worked with 2 strands of yarn held tog throughout.
     
  2. With larger hook and 2 strands of A, ch 59.
     
  3. 1st row: 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook. 1 sc in each ch to end of chain. 58 sc. Turn.
     
  4. 2nd row: Ch 1. 1 sc in each sc to end of row. Turn.
     
  5. Rep last row 5 times more. Do not fasten off.
     
  6. Fold Strap lengthwise.
     
  7. Joining row: Ch 1. Working through both thickness, sl st across side edges to join. Fasten off.
     
  8. With Bag folded flat, mark top edge 3” [7.5 cm] in from each side. Sew Straps to outside of Bag at markers as seen in picture.
