Hippie Purse

Take yourself back to the 60s with this crocheted Hippie Purse. Follow the easy instructions and you'll love the results. The Hippie Purse is great for anyone with modern style too because the 60s trends are back!

Hippie Purse

Materials:

  • worsted weight or ribbon size yarn 7 oz. appx. 460 yds. Style and color of your choice (the stash yarn used was Cassie Ribbon Yarn)
  • 1 ½ skeins Lion Brand Fun Fur 1.75 oz. color of your choice

Crochet Hook: size H

Instructions:

With crochet hook, using A, ch 4, join with a sl st to form a ring.
Rnd 1: With A, work 6 sc’s in ring, join with a sl st in first sc.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in same stitch as ch1, *2 sc’s in next ch, 3 sc in next ch, repeat from * one time, 2 sc’s in next ch, join with a sl st in ch-1 – 14 sc’s.
Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in same stitch as ch1, 2 sc’s in next 13 sc, join with a sl st in ch-1 – 28 sc’s.
Rnd 4: Ch 1, * 2 sc’s in next sc, sc in next sc, rep from * around, join with a sl st in ch-1 – 42 sc’s.
Rnds 5 and 6: Work even in sc – 42 sc’s.
Rnd 7: Ch 1, * 2 sc's in next sc, sc in next 2 sc's, rep from *
around, join with a sl st in ch-1 - 56 sc's..
Rnds 8 and 9: Work even in sc– 56 sc's.
Rnd 10: Ch 1, * 2 sc’s in next sc, sc in next 3 sc’s, rep from * around, join with a sl st in ch-1 – 70 sc’s.
Rnds 11 and 12: Work even in sc– 70 sc’s.
Rnd 13: Ch 1, * 2 sc’s in next sc, sc in next 4 sc’s, rep from * around, join with a sl st in ch-1 – 84 sc’s.
Rnds 14 and 15: Work even in sc– 84 sc’s.
Rnd 16: Ch 1, * 2 sc’s in next sc, sc in next 5 sc’s, rep from * around, join with a sl st in ch-1 – 98 sc’s.
Rnds 17 and 18: Work even in sc, join with a sl st in ch-1– 98 sc’s.
Rnd 19: Ch 1 and turn, working from WS, work 1 long sc in each sc 1 row below – sts will be twice as long and thick as in other rows. This forms ridge at bottom of sides of bag. join with a sl st in ch-1 98 sc’s.
Rnd 20: Work even in sc with A, join with a sl st in ch-1 – 98 sc’s.
Rnd 21 – 41: Repeat row 20 with no increases, join fun fur in last stitch
Rnd 42 – 47: Do next 6 rounds as follows: Repeat row 20 with 1 strand of A and 1 strand of fun fur held together, Fasten off the fun fur and weave in end. 98 sc’s.
Rnd 48 and 49: Continuing with A, work 1 sc in each sc , join with sl st in ch-1
Rnd 50: Turn and, working from RS, Ch 2, * dc in the next 2 sc’s, ch 2, skip 2 sc’s, dc in next 3 sc’s, rep from * around, join with a sl st in top of ch-2.
Rnd 51: Ch 1, * sc in each dc and each ch around, join with a sl in ch-1 .
Rnd 52 – 54: Ch 1, * sc in each sc around, joining each round to the first sc with a sl st. end off. (weave in loose end)

Crocheted Cords:
(Make 2) (leave tails 8 inches at each end if you want to tie on beads)
With Hook I and Holding 3 strands of ribbon yarn together crochet a chain twice as long as the width of the purse plus 4 inches,
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch. Ch 1, turn,
Row 2 & 3:: Sc in each sc across, ch 1 Turn,
Sl st or (sew a whip st) through the last sc row and the first ch row all the way across., fasten off …).

Finish: Weave cords in and out of dc row, skipping every other space and using opposite spaces for each cord. Tie together cord ends on opposite sides of purse. You can leave tails and string 2 or 3 beads on tails, tie 3 knots at end to hold, leave 1” tail below beads.

Lining: Lay bag flat with the bag top on the hem bottom of an old tank or tee, using bag as a pattern cut around main part of the bag 3 inches past bag sides and bottom, leave tee hem edge for top of lining. Sew a seam 1” around sides and bottom area of tee pattern inside out. Turn lining front-side out and hobo bag inside-out and slide hobo bag into lining and hand stitch the hem part of the lining and bag together with a whip stitch. Turn out-side in, trim all threads. You can also cut out a small rectangle and sew to front side of one side of tee pattern for a pocket if you like.
