Everyday Market Bag

This crochet bag is easy to make and perfect for the everyday person on the go.  You can make this adorable crocheted bag in any color you'd like so you always have a fun purse to take with you.  Great for beach goers and those who are heading off to the Farmer's Market, this simple crocheted bag is great for grab-n-go!

Everyday Market Bag

Materials:

  • 4 balls Bernat® Handicrafter Cotton (50 g/1.75 oz; 73 m/80 yds) yarn in Hot Green
  • 5 mm (U.S. H or 8) crochet hook, or size needed to obtain gauge

 

Measurements:  Approx 20 ins [51 cm] long excluding handles.

 

Gauge:  13 sc and 14 rows = 4 ins [10 cm].

 

Abbreviations:

  • Ch(s) = Chain(s)
  • rep = repeat
  • sc = single crochet
  • Sl st = Slip stitch
  • st(s) = stitch(es)
  • tr = treble crochet
  • tr3tog = Treble crochet 3 together - *(Yarn over) twice, insert hook in next stitch and draw up a loop, (yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook) twice; repeat from * 2 more times, yarn over and draw through all 4 loops on hook.
  • Yoh = yarn over the hook

 

Instructions:

Body

  1. Ch 39.
     
  2. 1st row: (RS). 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook. 1 sc in each ch to end of ch. 38 sc. Turn.
     
  3. 2nd to 4th rows: Ch 1. 1 sc in each sc to end of row. Turn.

Proceed with this Pattern

  1. 1st row: Ch 7 (counts as tr and ch 3). (Yoh) twice. Draw up a loop in next st. (Yoh and draw through 2 loops on hook) twice. Yoh and draw through all loops on hook. *Ch 5. [(Yoh) twice. Draw up a loop in next st. (Yoh and draw through 2 loops on hook) twice] twice. Yoh and draw through all 3 loops on hook – tr2tog made. Rep from * to last sc. Ch 3. 1 tr in last sc. Turn.
     
  2. 2nd row: Ch 5 (counts as tr and ch 1). Miss next 3 ch. Tr in next st. *Ch 5. (Yoh) twice. Draw up a loop in same st as before. (Yoh and draw through 2 loops on hook) twice. Miss next 5-ch sp. (Yoh)  twice. Draw up a loop in next st. (Yoh and draw through 2 loops on hook) twice. Yoh and draw through all 3 loops on hook – tr2tog over 2 sts made. Rep from * to last tr. Tr2tog over last st worked and next tr. Turn.
     
  3. 3rd row: Ch 7 (counts as tr and ch 3). Tr2tog over first st and next tr2tog. *Ch 5. Tr2tog over st just worked and next tr2tog. Rep from * to last tr. Ch 3. 1 tr in 4th ch of ch 5. Turn.
     
  4. Rep 2nd and 3rd rows until work from beg measures approx 20 ins [51 cm], ending with 3rd row.
     
  5. Next row: Ch 1. 1 sc in first st. *2 sc in next ch-5 sp. Rep from * to turning ch 7. 1 sc in ch-7 sp. 1 sc in 4th ch of ch 7. Turn.
     
  6. Next 3 rows: Ch 1. 1 sc in each sc to end of row. Turn. Fasten off at end of last row.

Handles

  1. With RS of work facing join yarn with sl st to top left corner of Bag. Ch 1. Work 30 sc evenly across side of Bag. Turn.
     
  2. Next row: Ch 57 (handle). 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook. 1 sc in each of next 55 ch. 1 sc in each sc to end of row. Turn. 86 sc in total.
     
  3. Next 2 rows: Ch 1. 1 sc in each sc to end of row. Turn.
     
  4. Fasten off at end of last row, leaving a long end. Sew end of handle in position.
     
  5. Rep for other side.
