Baby Hat with Tassle

This is an adorable baby hat from DMC Threads you can crochet yourself. The tassels really add a little something. This makes for a great baby shower gift. Free crochet patterns are great when they're for babies.

Size: To fit head circumference 14-16” (17”-19”)

Materials:

  • Steel Crochet Hook: Size 6 (1.8 mm)
  • Tapestry needle
  • DMC Traditions Crochet Cotton (Art.145), size
  • 10, color # 5109 – 1 ball (350 yard/ball)
  • 3 ½” square piece of cardboard for making tassels

Gauge: 12 rows pat st = 2”, 14 pat sts = 2”

Abbreviations:
ch = Chain
cont = Continue
ea = each
hdc = Half Double Crochet
pat st = Pattern Stitch
sc = Single Crochet
sl st = Slip Stitch
sp = Space
st = Stitch
 

Steps:
Pattern Stitch:
Ch 1, sc in 1st st, *hdc in next st, sc in next st, rep
from * across. Turn.
Decreasing Pattern Stitch:
To Work Decrease Sc over two stitches:
Insert hook in next st, yarn over and draw up a loop.
Insert hook in next st, yarn over and draw up a loop.
Yarn over and pull through all three loops on the hook.
To Work Decrease Hdc over two stitches:
Insert hook in next st, yarn over and draw up a loop.
Insert hook in next st, yarn over and draw up a loop.
Yarn over and pull through all three loops on the hook.
Note: Procedure for dec in both sc and hdc is the same.
Hat:
Side:
Ch 41, sc in 2nd ch from hook, work pat st in ea ch
across. 40 sts.
Cont in pat st until 88 (96) rows completed. Fasten off. Sew starting ch to last row worked.
Top:
Rnd 1: Join with sl st along edge of first row worked on Hat Side. Work pat st in same row and next 10
(11) rows, *skip 11 (12) rows on Side, work pat st in next 11 (12) rows, rep from *, end with sl st in 1st st.
44 (48) sts. Turn.
Rnd 2: Work in pat st.
Rnd 3: Working in pat st, *sc, hdc, dec sc, rep from * around. 33 (36) sts.
Rnd 4: Work in pat st.
Rnd 5: Working in pat st, *sc, dec hdc, rep from * around. 22 (24) sts.
Rnd 6: Work in pat st.
Rnd 7: Work dec sc around. 11 (12) sts.
Rnd 8: Work dec sc to last sc, sc in last sc. Fasten off leaving a 6” length for sewing. Weave through sts and pull tight to close.
Finishing:
Sew seams closed at corners of hat.
Trim:
Join with sl st in any row edge at bottom of hat. Ch 1,
sc in same st and in ea row around. End with sl st in 1st st. Fasten off.
Tassels: Make 4
Wind thread 50 times around cardboard. Slip off and fasten top with length of thread. Wind a 6” piece of
thread ¾” from top of tassel. Snip bottom threads.
Sew a tassel to each corner of hat.
