Little Frogs and Toads

Great little treats for Halloween, these little toads are very easy to crochet. According to Wikipedia, "any distinction between frogs and toads is irrelevant," so you can call these little darlings what you want.

Crochet Frogs


Size: approx 5cm (2.5in) long

Materials:

  • 10g Aran weight/worsted yarn in Green (MC)
  • 5g DK/light worsted yarn in Bamboo or White (CC)
  • 3.5mm (E/4) crochet hook
  • 10mm safety eyes or 2 small black beads
  • Stuffing
  • Pink embroidery thread
  • Yarn needle

abbreviations:
ch chain; CL4 insert hook into st, yarn around hook, draw loop through, rep into next st (3 loops on hook), rep into next st (4 loops on hook), rep into next st (5 loops on hook), yarn around hook, draw through all 5 loops on hook; dc double crochet; foll following; inc increase; rep repeat; ss slip stitch; st(s) stitch(es)

Instructions:

body top
Work in a continuous spiral.
Using MC, make a yarn ring, work 8dc into the ring.
Round 1: 1dc in each st to end of round. (8 sts)
Round 2: 2dc into each st to end of round. (16 sts)
Round 3: *2dc in next st, 1dc in foll 3 sts; rep from * three times more. (20 sts)
Round 4: *2dc in next st, 1dc in foll 2 sts; rep from * five times more, 1dc into next 2sts  (26 sts)
Round 5: *2dc in next st, 1dc into foll 3 sts; rep from * four times more, 1dc into next st. (32 sts) **
Round 6: Work in dc throughout.
Fasten off.

belly
Using CC, ch8, join with ss to make a ring.
Work as for body to **.
Rounds 6–11: Work in dc throughout.
Fasten off.

 

Legs (make 2)
Work in a continuous spiral.
Using MC, make a yarn ring, work 8dc into
the ring.
Round 1: 1dc into each st to end of round.
(8 sts)
Round 2: 2dc into each st to end of round.
(16 sts)
Round 3: *2dc in next st, 1dc in foll 3 sts; rep from * three times more. (20 sts)
Round 4: Work in dc throughout.
Do not fasten off, ch4 then CL4 to make a toe, rep twice starting in the same spot.

Finishing
Sew bead eyes or safety eyes onto head. Sew together the head and body leaving a small gap. Stuff. Sew remaining seam. Stitch legs onto body, using the photograph on page 44 as a guide. Pinch head and body to accentuate mouth, then use pink yarn to sew together to secure. For warts on toad, CL4 into 2 rows
on back.
