This is an easy crochet pattern from Caron International Yarns. Make a fun snake toy for that child in your life. You can make it on a whim.

  • Caron International's Simply Soft (100% acrylic; 6 oz/170 g, 315 yds/288 m):
  • 1 oz (A), 1 oz (C)
  • Caron International's Simply Soft Brites (100% Acrylic):
  • 1 oz (B)
  • Shown in: #9727 Black (A), #9606 Lemonade (B), #9729 Red (C)
  • One size US G-6 (4mm) crochet hook, or size to obtain gauge.
  • Stitch markers
  • Polyester fiberfill
  • Yarn needle

Safety eyes (not recommended for small children)

Gauge is not critical for this project

Chain (ch), half double crochet (hdc), single crochet (sc), slip stitch (sl st)

sc2tog: Singe crochet 2 together (sc decrease)—[Insert hook in next st and draw up a loop] twice, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook.

1.Gauge is not critical for this project. However, work tightly so that stuffing will not show through the stitches.

2. Snake is worked in continuous rounds, do not join and do not turn at the end of rounds. Place a marker to indicate the beginning of the round, and move marker up as work progresses.

3. Fill snake with fiberfill as you work. Stuff the snake after working every few inches.

4. To change color, work last st of old color to last yarn over; yarn over with new color and draw through all loops on hook to complete stitch. Fasten off old color and proceed with new color.

With A, ch 2.

Round 1: Work 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook; do not join and do not turn—6 sc.

Round 2: 2 sc in each sc around—12 sc.

Round 3: [Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc] 6 times—18 sc.

Rounds 4–6: Sc in each sc around.

Round 7: [2 sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc] 6 times—24 sc. Change to B in last st.

Rounds 8–10: Sc in each sc around. Change to C in last st of Round 10.

Round 11: [Sc in next 2 sc, sc2tog] 6 times—18 sc.

Rounds 12–18: Sc in each st around. Change to B in last st of Round 18. Do not fasten off.

If using safety eyes, insert them in Round 10 with 5 stitches between them. You will not be able to add safety eyes after snake is completed.

Rounds 1–3: With B, sc in each sc around—18 sc. Change to A in last st of Round 3.

Rounds 4–11: Sc in each sc around. Change to B in last st of Round 11.

Rounds 12–14: Sc in each sc around. Change to C in last st of Round 14.

Rounds 15–22: Sc in each sc around. Change to B in last st of Round 22.

Repeat Rounds 19–40 eight more times. Do not fasten off.

Shape Tail

Rounds 1–3: With B, sc in each sc around—18 sc. Change to A in last st of Round 3.

Round 4: Sc in each st around.

Round 5: [Sc in next st, sc2tog] 6 times—12 sts.

Round 6 and 7: Sc in each sc around.

Round 8: [Sc2tog] 6 times—6 sts.

Work a sl st in the next st. Fasten off leaving a long tail. Use the long tail to sew opening closed.

With C, ch 8.

Row 1: Sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in next ch, ch 3, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in next ch, hdc in next 5 ch of beginning ch-8.

Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Sew tongue to front of head. Using yarn needle, weave in all ends. If desired, embroider eyes onto face.

This may sound a little weird, but I have to thank you for getting your snake's name correct. It is scary how many people mix up the venomous coral snake (red touches yellow) with it's non-venomous look-alikes (red touhes black).
