Green Textured Throw

This beautiful free crochet pattern from Caron Yarns will add a subtle elegance to any home.  Use it for warmth or as a classy decoration in your living room or bedroom.  This textured throw is a great challenge for any crochet fan, and makes a great gift for the holidays or a house warming celebration.  This soft green yarn is great for anyone, but feel free to make this fun afghan pattern in whatever color yarn you'd like!

Materials:
The yarn used in this project has been discontinued.  You may be able to locate it at ShopCaron.com or selected retail locations, but supplies are limited.  If you wish to make this project using a substitute yarn, look for the Medium 4 logo on any other Caron yarn (common yarns that can easily be substituted include Simply Soft, Perfect Match, One Pound, and Natura.  You can find all the substitutions by viewing the Yarn Substitution Chart:  http://www.caron.com/yarn_classif.html).  Please keep in mind that you should always begin with a gauge swatch and be sure to convert yardage for any substitute yarn.

  • 11 skeins Caron Jewel Box™ (64% acrylic, 20% rayon, 16% polyester; 2.5oz/70.9g, 100yds/92m) Yarn in Emerald (or substitution yarn as listed in the Chart on Caron.com)
  • 5mm (US size H/8) crochet hook, or size to obtain gauge

 

GAUGE:  Using 5mm crochet hook, 1 patt rep [1 shell and 9 mesh sts] = 8”/20 cm; 8 rws in mesh patt = 4”/10 cm

 

Instructions:
Note: At beg of Rows 2-4, turning chain counts as first dc of shell.

Pattern:
Shell: Work [2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc] in next st.
Shell/Mesh Stitch (multiple of 27 sts + 1; 2-row rep)

  1. Row 1: [Dc, ch 2, 2 dc] in 4th st from hook (first shell worked; 3 skipped ch-sts count as first dc of shell), * ch 2, [skip (sk) 2, sc in next st, ch 3] 7 times, sk 2, sc in next st, ch 2, sk 2, work shell in next st; rep from * across, end work shell in last st – 109 sts. Ch 3, turn.
     
  2. Row 2: Work shell in ch-2 space of first shell, * dc in next ch-2 space, [ch 3, sc in next ch-3 space] 7 times, ch 3, dc in next ch-2 space, work shell in ch-2 space of next shell; rep from * across, end ch 3, turn.
     
  3. Row 3: Work shell in ch-2 space of first shell, * [ch 3, sc in next ch 3 space] 8 times, ch 3, work shell in ch-2 space of next shell; rep from * across, end ch 3, turn.
     
  4. Row 4: Work shell in ch-2 space of first shell * dc in next ch-3 sp, [ch 3, sc in next ch-3 space] 7 times, ch 3, dc in next ch-3 space, work shell in ch-2 space of next shell; rep from * across, end ch 3, turn.
     
  5. Rep Rows 3 and 4 for Shell/Mesh st.

 

Afghan:

  1. Ch 112. Work in Shell/Mesh st until Throw measures 52" in length [measure length over Mesh portion of st patt], end Row 3 of Shell/Mesh st. Fasten off.
     
  2. Block piece to measurements.
     
  3. For fringe, cut pieces 12" long. Using crochet hook and 8 strands held together, attach in ea ch-2 space of ea shell across top and bottom edges [13 ea edge].
