Stained Glass Rainbow Afghan

If you love crochet projects with a lot of color, you're going to love this Stained Glass Rainbow Afghan from Roseanna Beck.  Made using a variety of colorful yarns, this easy crocheted afghan pattern is a fun way to add some color to your decor.  This is also a great project for using up any yarn scraps that you may have lying around from other various projects.

Materials:

  • 1 skein Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in Black
  • Red Heart yarn in colors of your choice:  Round 1:  3 yards each square; Rounds 2 and 3:  13 yards each square
  • 5.0mm (US H-8), 5.50mm (US I-9) crochet hooks, or size needed for gauge
  • Yarn Needle

 

Gauge:  Square measures 5 ½” across

 

Instructions:
Throw  Measures:  40” x 51”

Squares (Make 63)

  1. Round 1: With H hook and color ch 3 and form a ring, ch 3, 2 dc in ring, (ch 3, 3 dc in ring) 3 times, ch 3, join to top of beginning ch 3 and fasten off.
     
  2. Round 2: Join contrasting color in any ch 3 space, ch 2 (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in space, *ch 1, skip 1 dc, dc in next dc, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in ch 3 space, repeat from * around, join to beginning. 
     
  3. Round 3: Slip st into ch 3 space, ch 3, (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in same space, *ch 1, skip 1 dc, dc in next dc, ch 1, skip 1 dc, dc in ch 1 space, dc, and ch 1 space (3 dc made), ch 1, skip 1 dc, dc in next dc, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in ch 3 space, repeat from * around, join to top of beginning ch 3 and fasten off.
     
  4. Round 4: With I hook and black (sc, ch 3, sc) in any corner ch 3 space,*ch 3, skip 3 dc, sc in ch 1 space, ch 3, skip dc, ch 1 space, and dc, sc in next dc, ch 3, skip dc, ch 1 space and dc, sc in ch 1 space, ch 3, (sc, ch 3, sc) in corner ch 3 sp, repeat from * around, join to beginning sc and fasten off.

 

Joining of Squares

  1. With black whip stitch squares together having 9 rows with 7 squares in each row.  Sew every   2nd stitch making a loop when joining the single crochets together. When whip stitching the rows together sew every 2nd stitch, make a loop when joining  the single crochets and joinings together. 

 

Edging

  1. With I hook and black starting at upper right corner (dc, ch 2, 2 dc, ch 2, dc) in ch 3 corner space, *(sc, ch 3, sc) in next ch 3 space, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch 3 space, (sc, ch 3, sc) in next ch 3 space, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch 3 space, (sc, ch 3, sc) in joining, continue pattern across ending (sc, ch 3, sc) in last ch 3 space, (dc, ch 2, 2 dc, ch 2, dc) in corner ch 3 space, repeat from * around entire throw, join to beginning and fasten off.
