Retro Circle Afghan

Give your home a retro feel with this retro circle afghan. This free afghan crochet pattern will teach you how to crochet an afghan with a fun circle pattern with pops of blue.

Retro Circle Afghan

Materials:

  • Crochet hook: One size US J/10 (6 mm), or size to obtain gauge
  • Stitch marker or piece of contrasting color yarn
  • Yarn needle
  • Caron International's Simply Soft (100% acrylic; 6 oz/170 g, 315 yds/288 m):#9703 Bone, 8 skeins (MC) #9701 White, 3 skeins (A) #9750 Chocolate, 3 skeins (C)
  • Caron International's Simply Soft Brites (100% acrylic; 6 oz/170 g, 315 yd/288 m skein): #9608 Blue Mint, 3 skeins (B)

Instructions:

GAUGE
In single crochet, using size US J/10 (6 mm) hook, 10 sts and 12 rows = 4"/10 cm. Gauge is not critical for this project.

STITCHES USED
Chain (ch). Single crochet (sc). Slip st

NOTES

  1. Circles are worked first, and corner triangles are done after circle is completed.
  2. Mark first stitch of each round, moving marker up as you work.
  3. There should always be 2 slip stitches where rounds join, whether or not colors change. The extra slip st after joining makes rounds look even.

THROW

  1. Circle in Square 1 (Make 2): Using MC, chain 3 sts, join with slip st to form ring.
     
  2. Round 1 (RS): Ch 1, marking first st, work 6 sc in ring, join with slip st to first sc – 6 sc. Slip st in next sc.
     
  3. Round 2: Ch 1, work 2 sc in each sc around, join with slip st in first sc – 12 sc. Fasten off MC, join Color A with slip st in next sc.
     
  4. Round 3: Ch 1, sc in same st as joining, 2 sc in next sc, * sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc, repeat from * around, slip st in first sc – 18 sc. Fasten off A, join B with slip st in next sc.
     
  5. Round 4: Ch 1, sc in same st as slip st, 2 sc in next sc, * sc in each of next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc, repeat from * around, join with slip st in first sc – 24 sc. Slip st in next sc.
     
  6. Round 5: Ch 1, sc in same st as slip st, 2 sc in next sc, * sc in each of next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc, repeat from * around, end sc in each of last 2 sts, slip st in first sc – 30 sc. Fasten off B, join MC with slip st in next sc.
     
  7. Round 6: Ch 1, sc in same st as slip st, 2 sc in next sc, * sc in each of next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc, repeat from * around, end sc in each of last 3 sts, slip st in first sc – 36 sc. Fasten off MC, join C with slip st in next sc.
     
  8. Round 7: Ch 1, sc in same st as slip st, 2 sc in next sc, * sc in each of next 5 sc, 2 sc in next sc, repeat from * around, end sc in each of last 4 sts, join with slip st in first sc – 42 sc. Fasten off C, join A with slip st in next sc.
     
  9. Round 8: Ch 1, sc in same st as slip st, 2 sc in next sc, * sc in each of next 6 sc, 2 sc in next sc, repeat from * around, end sc in each of last 5 sts, join with slip st in first sc – 48 sc. Slip st in next st.
     
  10. Round 9: Ch 1, sc in same st as slip st, 2 sc in next sc, * sc in each of next 7 sc, 2 sc in next sc, repeat from * around, end sc in each of last 6 sts, join with slip st in first sc – 54 sc. Fasten off A, join B with slip st in next sc.
     
  11. Round 10: Ch 1, sc in same st as slip st, 2 sc in next sc, * sc in each of next 8 sc, 2 sc in next sc, repeat from * around, end sc in each of last 7 sts, join with slip st in first sc – 60 sc. Fasten off B, join C with slip st in next sc.
     
  12. Round 11: Ch 1, sc in same st as slip st, 2 sc in next sc, * sc in each of next 9 sc, 2 sc in next sc, repeat from * around, end with sc in each of last 8 sts, join with slip st in first sc – 66 sc. Slip st in next sc.
     
  13. Round 12: Ch 1, sc in same st as slip st, 2 sc in next sc, * sc in each of the next 10 sc, 2 sc in next sc, repeat from * around, end sc in each of last 9 sts, join with slip st in first sc – 72 sc. Fasten off C, join MC with slip st in next sc.
     
  14. Round 13: Ch 1, sc in same st as slip st, 2 sc in next sc, * sc in each of next 11 sc, 2 sc in next sc, repeat from * around, end sc in each of last 10 sts, join with slip st in first sc – 78 sc. Slip st in next sc.
     
  15. Round 14: Ch 1, sc in same st as slip st, 2 sc in next sc, * sc in each of next 12 sc, 2 sc in next sc, repeat from * around, end sc in each of last 11 sts, join with slip st in first sc – 84 sc. Fasten off MC, join A with slip st in next sc.
     
  16. Round 15: Ch 1, sc in same st as slip st, 2 sc in next sc, * sc in each of next 13 sc, 2 sc in next sc, repeat from * around, end sc in each of last 12 sts, join with slip st in first sc – 90 sc. Fasten off MC, join B with slip st in next sc.
     
  17. Round 16: Ch 1, sc in same st as slip st, 2 sc in next sc, * sc in each of next 14 sc, 2 sc in next sc, repeat from * around, end sc in each of last 13 sts, join with slip st in first sc – 96 sc. Slip st in next sc.
     
  18. Round 17: Ch 1, sc in same st as slip st, 2 sc in next sc, * sc in each of next 15 sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * around, end sc in each of last 14 sts, join with slip st in first sc – 102 sc. Fasten off MC, join C with slip st in next sc.
     
  19. Round 18: Ch 1, sc in same st as slip st, 2 sc in next sc, * sc in each of next 16 sc, 2 sc in next sc, repeat from * around, end with sc in each of last 15 sts, join with slip st in first sc – 108 sc. Fasten off C, join A with slip st in next sc.
     
  20. Round 19: Ch 1, sc in same st as slip st, 2 sc in next sc, * sc in each of next 17 sc, 2 sc in next sc, repeat from * around, end sc in each of last 16 sts, join with slip st in first sc – 114 sc. Fasten off A, join MC with slip st in next sc.
     
  21. Round 20: Sc in same st as slip st, 2 sc in next sc, * sc in each of next 18 sc, 2 sc in next sc, repeat from * around, end sc in each of last 17 sc, join with slip st to first sc – 120 sc. Do not fasten off.

Corner Triangles on Circle

  1. First Triangle: Row 1 (RS): Sc in slip st of joining and in each of next 14 sc, turn – 15 sc.
     
  2. Row 2: Ch 1, skip first sc, sc across to last 2 sc, skip next sc, sc in last sc, turn – 13 sc. Repeat Row 2 until 3 sc remain.
     
  3. Next Row: Ch 1, skip first sc, sc in next 2 sc, turn – 2 sc.
     
  4. Last Row: Ch 1, skip first sc, sc in last sc – 1 sc. Fasten off.

Second Triangle: Row 1 (RS):

  1. Skip next 15 sc on circle following previous Triangle. Join yarn and ch 1. Sc in joining and in next 14 sc, turn – 15 sc. Finish as for first Triangle.
     
  2. Third and Fourth Triangle: Work as for second Triangle. After the fourth triangle is completed, do not fasten off.
     
  3. Edging Round 1 (RS): Chain 1 and, marking first st, work 3 sc in last sc of Triangle, * work 10 sc evenly along left side of Triangle, sc in next 15 sc between Triangles, work 10 sc evenly along side of next Triangle, work 3 sc in tip of Triangle, repeat from * around, end 10 sc along side of last Triangle, join with slip st to first sc – 152 sc.
     
  4. Round 2: Ch 1, sc in joining and each sc around, working 3 sc in each corner, join with slip st to first sc – 160 sc.
     
  5. Round 3: Repeat Round 2 – 168 sc. Fasten off.

Square should measure approximately 15”.

COLOR SEQUENCES
Note: Round 20 is always MC.

Circle in Square 1A (Make 1)

  1. Round 1: MC
     
  2. Rounds 2 -18: Work in colors as for Rounds 3-18 of Circle in Square 1.
     
  3. Round 19: C.

Circle in Square 2 (Make 3)

  1. Round 1: MC
     
  2. Rounds 2 and 3: B.
     
  3. Round 4: A.
     
  4. Rounds 5 and 6: MC.
     
  5. Rounds 7 and 8: C.
     
  6. Round 9: B.
     
  7. Round 10: MC.
     
  8. Rounds 11 and 12: A.

FINISHING
Using yarn needle, weave in all ends.Sew squares together, through back loops only, as shown in diagram.
Border: Using MC, work 1 round of sc around outside of completed Throw, working 3 sc in each corner. Fasten off and weave in ends.
