Cuddle with the Cure Afghan

Free easy afghan crochet patterns are awesome enough, but when they remind us of someone who has beaten breast cancer, they're all the better.  This Cuddle with the Cure Afghan is sure to bring survivors comfort and coziness.

Cuddle with the Cure Afghan

Materials:

  • Caron Soft Pink worsted weight, 20 ounces
  • (3) 5.6 oz skeins, Bernat Baby coordinates, pink rose, sports weight
  • (2) 5.6 oz skein Bernat Baby coordinates, white blanc, sports weight
  • 12 oz, Caron white, worsted weight (Hold one strand on Caron and one strand of Bernat throughout)
  • Crochet hook: N 10
     

Instructions:

  1. Chain 88
     
  2. Row 1: DC in 3rd chain from hook and each chain across, chain one, turn (86 dc)
     
  3. Row 2: sc in each stitch across, chain 3, turn (86 sc). Chain three counts as dc throughout
     
  4. Row 3: DC in each stitch across (86 dc)
     
  5. Row 4: repeat row 2 (86 sc)
     
  6. Row 5: DC in first 4 sc, popcorn in next sc, dc in next 10 sc, popcorn in next sc, dc in next 20 sc, popcorn in next sc, dc in next 10 sc, popcorn in next sc, dc in next 20 sc, popcorn in next sc, dc in next ten sc, popcorn in next sc, dc in next 4 sc and in the turning chain
     
  7. Row 6: repeat row 2 for all even numbered rows. When making sc in popcorn stitch, insert hook in sc of popcorn stitch only
     
  8. Row 7: ( The remaining instructions give the number of dc and popcorn stitches)  5 dc, popcorn, 8 dc, popcorn, 22 dc, popcorn, 8 dc, popcorn, 22 dc, popcorn, 8 dc popcorn, 5 dc, dc in turning chain, chain 1, turn.
     
  9. Row 9: repeat row 7
     
  10. Row 11: 6 dc, popcorn, 6 dc, popcorn, 24 dc, popcorn, 6 dc, popcorn, 24 dc, popcorn, 6 dc, popcorn, 5 dc, dc in turning chain, chain 1, turn
     
  11. Row 13: Repeat row 11
     
  12. Row 15: 7 dc, popcorn, 4 dc, popcorn, 26 dc, popcorn, 4 dc, popcorn, 26 dc, popcorn, 4 dc, popcorn, 7 dc, dc in turning chain, chain 1, turn

  26. Row 43: repeat row 3 (dc across), switch to white (cut pink and weave in ends)
     
  27. Row 45: repeat row 3 (white)
     
  28. Row 47: repeat row 3 (white)
     
  29. Row 49: repeat row 3 (white)
     
  30. At end of row 50, don’t chain 3 with white, switch back to pink by joining with sc and chain 3 with pink (cut white and weave in ends)
     
  31. Row 51: repeat row 3
     
  32. Row 53-91: Repeat row 5 through 43 (but don’t switch to white)
     
  33. Row 93: Repeat row 3 (dc across)
     
  34. Row 94: Repeat row 2 for the last time (sc across)
     
  35. Border: Round 1: Holding both white strand together, starting in any corner, three sc in center corner stitch, sc across to next corner, 3 sc in corner space around all four sides, (chain to the two strands of pink or continue in white)
     
  36. Round 2: chain four (counts as first dc and space one), three dc in center sc of corner space, chain one, dc, chain one in every other sc across to next corner, three dc in center sc of corner, repeat around all four sides, (you can stop here and finish off or switch to white and keep going)
     
  37. Round 3: repeat round 2
     
  38. Round 4: chain three, sc in one chain space around, repeat for all four sides, in corners sc in center dc instead.
     
  39. Weave in any remaining ends.
