They sell licensed fabric with college logos, popular characters, and many more licensed designs, but I heard that a fellow crafter got a cease and desist order the other day? What's the story? Get an overview of what all this means from Maria Nerius.

If I changed the letterings to football logos, making the letters in a different design, could I sell my crafts without getting in trouble?

Thank you for posting this...I recently contacted the Copyright office in the US to get similar information as it pertains to using other peoples patterns and then selling them. I wanted to know what were everyone's right and responsibilities. I fear that if the owners of many items, images, and whatnot were to take a stroll through Etsy there would be *a lot* of people in trouble :-(

Why do stores sell appliques like college logos, disney or john deere for examples if you cant use them like on your crochet hat or blankets etc? I have even seen filet patterns with college logos, nascar, disney, etc. This is really confusing.

You are allowed to use those licensed appliques for personal use or for gifts. You just aren't allowed to use them for items that are for sale without paying a licensing fee to the company that holds the trademark or license (unless you receive a waiver from said company). Stores sell those items for people to use for personal use, not for resale.

Are we allowed to use those things for gifting or our our selves?

Yes, those items are allowed for personal use. Trademarks / licenses only become an issue when they are sold for profit. As long as you do not sell the items, you are fine to use them.

Why wouldn't it be if you buy the fabric then you sould be able to do with it what you want? You would think if you BUY it is would give you the right to make something and then sell it.
